Is Oculus really better than Vive in ED??

So I've got another week before my free return of my Vive. I need to decide if I should trade it in for an Oculus. I predominantly use the Vive with ED.

Is ED really that much better with an Oculus??

I sold my Vive within a couple of weeks as I couldn't read the menus in E: D. Other games were good in it. However, I got a Rift over the summer, and it is so much better with E: D (in my opinion). I can read everything fine now, and it has transformed the game for me.

Did you notice a difference in the FOV? I hear that the Oculus is smaller.

I personally prefer my Rift, the only thing I thought was better on Vive was the positional tracking setup.

It is.
But the field of clarity is far wider, so more text is readable in the hud without having to look around.
It is still limited but significantly more.

granted I haven't tried the new audio head strap but there is no doubt the rift is lighter, sits better so jiggles less when moving your head.

One major negative for the rift could be USB flooding, if you have subpar USB ports it could render it nearly useless, but there is really no way to he certain. until you have it in hand.

Nope.

There is some slightly improved pixel clarity in the Oculus, but the FOV seems smaller, and the Vive has better colour depth and contrast - it's also 3 times brighter.

I have them both, I use the Vive a high percentage of the time. If Im going to play for longer than an hour, it'll likely be the Vive I use because it looks better - black is black, the background environment is beautiful like it is on the desktop, nebula and gas clouds blend in perfectly. To me that's more immersive. On the Oculus, the background looks like a badly encoded DivX, colours band together [no matter what hack you do,] there's a grey wash over everything and the god rays are worse. The Fresnel lenses on the Vive capture more of the god-ray light leaving the vision cleaner in that regard. When I first got my Oculus I thought I must have left greasy fingerprints on the lenses. I didn't, it just looks like that [after using a Vive for a year.]

For Elite, to me, the Vive looks better. In WarThunder for example, where there's less darkness on screen, I use the Oculus; In that situation the slight improvement in sharpness is more important than the colours. Roomscale VR games, I always use the Vive.

Its all personal preference and what you think is more important for the games you play.

That'll change in January now anyway, as I have ordered the 8k Pimax. That's not really relevent to the thread, I just wanted to say Im getting a Pimax 8k :p

I am unsure but I wonder if not all rift screens are created equally. I read a few complaint s about artefacts on the sky box and I have seen my fair share of poorly encoded divx scenes at night so DO know what am looking for.... But I am just not seeing it. God rays are a thing but rarely an issue in game. ED is worse than anything else in game I have scene (normally it's just menus) but even in ED personally it does not bother me. PS look forward to feedback about pimax. I hovered over 8kx but I want to see what all the major players gen 2 devices are even if I may have 6 months of envy ;)

I tested both and my choice was the Rift, because of wearing comfort and sharper images. The Vive has a larger FoV and is better suited for wearing glasses (you need to invest a few bucks to make a Rift more suitable for that. I would recommend the Rift as the best HMD for playing simulations, but better you wear them both to test it for yourself. The coice between Rift and Vive is somewhat subjective.

regardless... VR is the most awesome develepment since i first played video games back in the 80s.. Get an HMD!

I'm fully agree with mp4x. If you have gtx1080 or 1080ti go for vive - with high supersampling at steam vr picture clarity looks like on Rift. And don't forget grab VR Cover 6 MM foam replacement becouse without it you will not survie this battle sir !

Both are great but the Vive is just flat out better for ED IMO

I have both headsets and in the Rift it just feels so dark and lifeless, the brightness and contrast just isn't there and has banded greyish blacks compared to the deep blacks and vibrant colours in the Vive which is what you need for space,
So much that I thought the rift was faulty at first until I tried 2 other friends rifts, also the fishbowl warping and the loss of FOV especially in the Vertical, It really isn't worth the small boost in pixel density and minor FPS performance the Rift offers. (Disclaimer I use the DAS on the Vive and its very comfortable)

And yes I've tried all the fixes made a small amount of difference but made the banding worse

TBH I brought the Rift in the summer sale expecting to be impressed and have been left slightly underwhelmed i would say,

All of which means the Vive is still my go to headset for ED and racing sims too.

Oh yeah, that too! I have a 100% cotton vrcover on the standard Vive foam, and it's like wearing a pillow. The oculus actually leaves a ring/imprint on your face after wearing it a while because of the firmer and thinner foam. Admittedly that's also a personal preference, or at least the shape of one's head/face will contribute to that. Flip side is that the Oculus does sit on top of your head better - but the pillow still wins, for me, in overall comfort

Why are you considering returning the Vive? I have a Rift, love it, don't remotely regret getting it but understand that both headsets are equally excellent. What do you not like about the Vive that you hope the Rift might improve upon?

Eh? So you didnt even bother to change the HUD color? I've had Vive over a year and all texts are completely readable with correct color scheme. ;)
That default orange HUD is just poison, even with Rift and with VR in general.

You do have to be careful where you connect the sensors.

BTW, I prefer the Vive for Ed but I'm not trying to be anti Rift. Either is awesome and a 2D destroyer. I consider myself a VR enthusiast and thankful to be fortunate enough to be in a position where I can pick and choose which games I play on what device.

If you can try both devices, do so, but if you can't just buy one and don't sweat it.

Well I have the rift only so cannot give a comparison. The reason I got a rift was the oculus summer sale and the other exclusives there are for the rift, but now the sale is over and the vive has dropped in price I think I would go for the vive.

But people are saying 2.4 brings a small improvement in performance for VR, I am curious to see what this is all about and how this will effect the difference in HMDs.

I doubt I will be getting an 8K pimax as I am waiting for pixel density to improve rather than FOV.

The screen door effect. I hear it's not as bad on the Rift.

But after reading everyone's comments, I think I'll stick with the Vive. Maybe I'll get an Rift to try... the MS store has a 30 day free return policy. :)
