Is Odyssey a Single player shooter with optional CO-OP now?

From patch notes on update 5

When a side of an on foot conflict zone gets below 750 points, new players should not be able to join the instance, this now has the exception of wing members of players already in the instance.

So the opportunity for organic ground based PvP has been all but removed it seems. Where are you most likely to find another player to engage in PvP with while on foot? Conflict Zones. Unless your timing is perfect, you won't get to instance with anyone organically, you either have to see them going to the surface before hand, follow them down, get the same instance after glide, guess what team they are going to pick, and then hope you pick the right team in time BEFORE HAND to even have the opportunity for any type of organic ground based PvP.

What kind of opportunities for organic PvP are we left with? Maybe you will run into someone at the same settlement, and maybe instance with them? The chances for any form of organic PvP to happen on the ground have been lowered dramatically with this change, almost as low as the chance to encounter any form of PvP while in the SRV.

[This is where the obligatory "always has been" meme goes]

ED has always been singleplayer with multiplayer hacked on. No serious multiplayer title uses P2P it's a cheap ass garbage tech for any game that has a PvP element. The cheap out they did with the network type is more egregious in an on foot mode, as it's massive short comings are even more apparent. If FDev wanted to make a serious multiplayer game, they would pay for decent dedicated servers. The fact they don't, well i'll let you draw your own conclusions.

This was asked for before the game launched, and there was a poll done for it. The better server structure would have came with a monthly sub fee and the community decided against it. Which is fine. There are plenty multiplayers games that make P2P work, it is not the best kind of connection, but it can be made to work well enough.

I tend to agree with this. From the standpoint of someone using FS to travel to a location, you'd not want to join a battle that was already 1/4 done and so it makes sense that it won't dump you into that. But if you're just after recycling CZs by resetting, this works 100% fine and I'd like to just join any active instance even if it's 3/4 done, because then we can reset it when the battle is done and try again, meaning we will all still be in the same instance.

I think the larger issue is the idea that restarting CZs just isn't a thing and is only loosely supported by forcing the game to acknowledge it via relogski. All of this would be negated if it was simply supported so that all CZs restart by design after a 2-3 minute wait... (so at the battle end you get to choose to get picked up to go back to the station or you hit "ready up" for the next battle... whoever does that gets included in the next battle and it resets for you)... I know, not very realistic but who cares.

FDev are not the poor startup they were at kickstarter. They have a cash shop for microtransactions! The absolute first thing they should have addressed, once the game took off, was the garbage network tech. There is absolutely no serious multiplayer PvP game that uses P2P it's list of "bad" comparative to dedicated servers, makes it a non choice for anyone not making "my first shooter".

EDIT to add: I will concede if the game you are making is chess, then P2P is a reasonable decision.

How many years will it take before people grasp ED never has been a pvp game? Its a solo game with co-op elements in an open online environment.
Then maybe it should not be marketed as one

Correction: it's a solo player game with coincidentally magnificent opportunity for ganking people that haven't properly researched the snake pit they're jumping into.

I agree with you that P2P is not optimal for a competitive experience, but that is not the game that we all bought, and we all knew that going into the transaction.

The poor connectivity is no excuse for effectively blocking off a majority of the organic PvP content to players that would much rather have it. If you don't want it you are welcome to play in Solo or PG, or you can even leave the CZ and start over if you see someone else in open and that bothers you as long as you don't log off in combat that's totally fine.

Join before one side gets to low tickets. It's not meant to be farmed for easy wins.

Would be nice to be able to instance with strangers at community goals, but now I realise why that was never happening at the Jupiter CG the other week. When it's the busiest opportunity to instance with other players but you only get your own personal CZs every time, it's pretty disappointing gameplay. If that was the experience I wanted, I'd have clicked on solo when I loaded up the game.

No space to organic encounters.

750 tickets is not low, tickets. It's not an easy win either. 750 tickets is only 1/4 of the game's tickets expired which can be swayed either way multiple times during a match if there are competent participants taking part, and not poor AI.

I guess some people would rather just have an easy win by farming the not too bright AI. Which is fine.

I would hope that if I am in a game with no one in it that even if i was down to 100 tickets someone would come in and make things a bit more challenging.

EDIT-for typo.

They need to add some sort of in game CQC game mode that you can holo into. I'd be quite happy to have this and PvP in Elite.... I'm hoping a big community goal with ground combat comes along and we can pew pew eachother. The punishment is no where near as harsh as ship combat.

If anyone asked me for a good multiplayer experience, then ED would be on my avoid list. A game doesn't have to have PvP to be multiplayer, but pew pew is a major part of the game's design. I don't PvP in ED. because it is laughably bad. I PvP in Apex legends, a F2P game completely funded by cosmetic sales.. It's an actual multiplayer game, and we still complain about no regs, and the server tech. You can't seriously PvP in ED, and that's why as a PvPer i don't even try.

EDIT to add: it's also why the notion that EDO would bring in all the COD players was hilarious. A COD player or any major FPS player, in EDO PvP wouldn't play more than 5 minutes before uninstalling.
