Is SINGLEPLAYER just a afterthought?

Hey everyone. After high expectations and a massive disappointment with XRebirth (although I still have a bit of hope) I'm nosing around here for something to fill the void.

I get the feeling though that the new Elite doesn't seem to really have much to give in regards to the Single Player experience, or maybe I'm not too clued up on what is going on (the reason why my hope was on XR). For me the whole MMO Elite thing won't be the same game I played (and hope to play again) years ago.

Am I wrong?

This is just a copy and paste of what I wrote in another post regarding this.

As far as I understand it.

The main part of the game that evolves and changes with player interaction is the Online or MMO game. Which requires people to log in and play in on the same shard together.

The Offline or single player version only changes with your input and the occasional update pushed from FD based on the changes made by them, you do not see changes made by other players. It would be like in Star Citizen and you make your own server and you never see anyone else or have updates from the parent server.

The Offline version does not evolve as the online does, not live anyway.

So basically you can play either as single player and only see the changes you make but you have the universe like the original Elite to play in or the Multiplayer/MMO version here the universe changes and evolves through both your actions and others.

As a single player version you only get to see any changes that get pushed to you via Frontier. But to get these updates you will have to still be logged in to their servers even while playing a solo game.

If you want to be fully offline with no connection then it is the same universe all the time as you get it from the first install. The changes that happen are the ones you make alone.

You probably are wrong, since the game is already filled with more content than FE2 and FFE were (various sorts of missions etc.). Much more active single player than any of the originals were, in that regard.

Multiplayer wasn't an afterthought, since David Braben's been talking about multiplayer Elite for at least a decade now.

I strongly suggest that if you want single player experience, just play single player online. That way you will get fun of evolving galaxy, but won't have to mess around with other players.

I would suggest offline only if you are without stable Internet connection or you don't want to play online by principles.

Answering the topic, no multiplayer is not "just a afterthought".

Actually, it was a base requirement that impacted upon the game design. Things as possible exploits, wealth/equipment scaling and balance are far more a concern than would be if the game was just single player. And, of course, even the physics were changed in order to allow a multiplayer experience - no more star dreamer/time acceleration.

That said, describing ED as an MMO is wrong. The design is a post MMO styled multiplayer. Which basically means that Mr. Braben wanted to create a game where you can be playing own your own and call the help of a friend (if available) to help you out of a tight spot, for example. And where player action impacted upon a shared universe, even if you don't actually meet the player in space.

AFAIK, the game is also designed around a "light income" concept (no subscription and low regular income from ingame sales) - which means low central server overhead and light architecture (p2p communication, for example).

Did you mean maybe, "Is Single Player an afterthought?"

MP is a core feature of the new Elite, whereas you will be able to play in two SP game modes (one just like the old games, one with internet connection to update changes to the game world taken from the running MP servers hosted by FD). So no, single player is not an afterthought, but it isn't the main focus of the game like MP.

I'll be playing it mostly in one of the SP modes as i've not yet had an MMO type experience that didn't ruin a game for me (broken immersion/'griefing' etc).

Elite 4 has been talked about as multiplayer for as long as Braben has talked about it at all. Which is WELL over a decade. Elite 4 was talking multiplayer before World of Warcraft was even announced!

To be precise as early as 2000 by media references.

YES! Oeps. I meant: Is SINGLEPLAYER just a afterthought?

Thanks anyway. I think I will try the single player online. I don't have much qualms with that.

Fortunately that there's a persistent world/mmo, otherwise I would not Backer, solo mod is the past for me.

If that's the case, would a kindly Mod re-title the thread accordingly, please?

I would still have to answer no to that question as well I remember way back when multiplayer was first talked about that it was expected that single player would come first and multiplayer would be added later So both single and multil player modes have been on the table for as long as elite 4 has been publicly talked about

Changed, let me know if it's ok. :D

Some people use the term "flexiplayer" to describe Elite's approach. The basic idea seems to be that you can dial the amount of interaction up or down to your taste.

Hi,

I'm also hoping for a decent SP experience and am very wary of MP games in general not just because of new people being picked on but of poor internet speed and connection. I loved the X series (until Rebirth) so have become a backer for Elite Dangerous as I adored playing Frontier on the Amiga.

And I too will be playing SP online....for all the same reasons.

Single player offline definitely won't be an afterthought. There are several that may not be able nor want to play online and they are catered for. It won't be as RICH as the evolving galaxy but there should be plenty to do in single player offline.
