is the alliance challenger a good salvation / guardian engineered thargoid hunter.

I have got all the components I need to unlock some anti vthargoid weapons and modules.

I have seen a really potent krait build (down-to-earth astronomy I think was the guy who made it) however as I already use a phantom I wanted a change of cockpit.

is the loss of 1x medium gun offset by the gain of 3 smalls?
other than that both ships seem similar.

I don't mind not having the absolute pinacle meta ship just to have a different ship but I don't want to gimp myself too much.

most of the guides are out of date and pre the new gear.

For AX Combat all medium ships are fine. However the best ship is Chieftain and then Chally. Krait/Phantom are also great hunters, especially in speedrunning technics but chieftain and chally are far better orbiters. To your weapons question, unlock the standard gauss and learn FIRST to orbit and fight with it. Fighting goids is all about avoiding their damage, cause they are very powerfull. So you need a ship that can cold orbit well. Firepower is second! Again, the best is to fly the ship that you love, but do try chieftain and chally before anything else! Especially chieftain has no match in AX Combat, by far....
 
Well, from personal experience (and I am far from a great AX pilot) I was underwhelmed by the Challenger I recently put together. On paper it looked very strong but in practice? Nah. Felt sluggish compared with FAS / Chieftain / either of the Kraits and the theoretical extra firepower didn’t seem to make a big difference.

So, I reckon one is generally better off with a Chieftain. And if they do lift the experimental weapon limit it will be even better.

But I hate the cockpit on the Alliance ships so have gone back to my FAS and Kraits.

FAS is also a gormidable ship which i forgot to mention. It turns better that anything else and the reason chief is better is cause it has more dps, more limper limpet cap and smaller damage profile (takes less damage,fas is a bulky and takes more damage). Chally as you say isnt as fast as FAS/Chief and hanldes worse than both, but is a super stable platform and dfinitely my no3 choice after chief and fas. And for modshards az CZ build for me Chally is best choice cause it gives you the 3m hardpoints, plus beams plus flak and many repairability without needing station support!I guess FASS will work too and tbf i will use it in my next CZ.
BUT for a newcomer in the AX, my recommendation is definitely Chieftain. Its the "school-to-go" ship.

I so want a “Federal AX Assault Ship” variant that swaps out the C3 on the roof for a pair of close mounted C2s in the “forehead” section - one above the other like the C3s on the Chief.
