Is the ASP Propeller driven?

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

It is an Asp.

It is not an ASP.

Got it? :D

This was a public service announcement on behalf of the Pedant Party

The sound is great but it does sound like a prop plane, curiously! My Asp has taken me all the galaxy (well, to Sagittarius A* and back) and I just don't have the heart to sell her despite wanting a Python rather badly.

ASP. Asp Scout Plane.

The Asp Explorer models found in game use a late-model Lakon Buffalo-3 Space-Screw as their primary conduit between the primary Power Plant socket and the forward engineering Distributor node, leading to their characteristic "screw-loose" rumble during normal spacebound operating modes. This unusual arrangement is a direct result of the removal of the original integrated self-destruct payload requiring a booster to cope with the extended length of the power distribution trunking around the newly installed cargo slots.

Replacement of the Space-Screw with e.g. a liquid cooled dyna-flow transport system is strongly discouraged and will automatically invalidate insurance cover.

I love it. One of the best sounding ships in game. Clarkson quote "It sounds like God of Thunder, gargling with nails" fits the bill.

Anyone notice the Asp has a second pilot seat underneath the cockpit? You can see it if you bug out hyperspace by toggling the debug camera as the timer counts down.

Right underneath where you sit. With its own canopy and everything.

That's where the giant, hungry, angry bear lives, with the thorn in its paw, growling and snarling up at you, wishing you dead, every time you change the throttle.

I can't not hear a propeller plane - it's just too precisely a familiar sound. The people who love the sound - are you mostly unfamiliar with the sound of small prop planes on the ground (eg didn't go to airshows as a kid, etc) allowing it to be an awesome sound without associated context, or is it that the familiarity between Asps and small prop planes is striking and you like it because of that? (Eg the "It sounds like a Lancaster!" school of thought :) )

I wouldn't say it sounds like anything with a radial or a V12 engine. They're much more epic compared to the naff farting of the Asp Exploder.

If anything, it reminds me most closely of a model helicopter in autorotation, perhaps being chucked through a few aerobatic stunts on the way down. Or a flag of plastic razzing in the wind.

If there was an aircraft engine/prop note in there, I think something powered by a Rotax 912 would be the closest contender - there's a SkyArrow 650T at the airfield where I work which at about fast idle engine speeds can emit a remarkably similar note.

Much as I'm indifferent about the engine of the Asp, it can bring a grin when you blast into a station, heave it about and fill the inside of the can with a deafening, bellowing roar. Proper noise bomb! :D

Sorry that my first post is a bit negative but I have been on a long grind to purchase an ASP. On the whole its fine but the thruster noise is terrible. I was expecting something meaty strong and sexy. Maybe its me as I have been flown FSX and X-plane for years but is sounds as if I am flying a Boeing Stearman. Prop noise in space - it's a first......:(..
When I first heard my Aaaaasp I thought it sounded like the rubber band was a bit loose on mine. So yours sounds the same?
.
I have grown to love it though.

Against the grain on this one. I had come to the conclusion that the Asp was equipped with a flatulence space drive back when I piloted one early on. Haven't been in one since release, just bothered me for some reason. I own a late model 5.0L Mustang btw, and for reference, the sound of the Asp does not come close to the exhaust note of the 302.

Heh, I own a chevrolet V-8, it's a fine engine, but the Asp is definitely propeller noise to me - there's no kind of engine that will make that sound on its own.
