Horizons Is the Scarab the only vehicle we'll ever get?

Concept art (by Frontier's Ben Andrews) of another SRV variant (but I guess this was a design that evolved into the one we already have):

That looks like a more proper cargo-focused SRV.

A mining SRV would be cool, with a turreted mining laser and some more cargo capacity and fuel capacity in exchange for less agility/speed than the Scarab. Call it the Badger or something

Cool!

Kudos to Ben! :D [up]

Its amazing the level of realism today's rendering software is capable of! In the hands of a great artist obviously! ;)

I agree that the vehicle represented here in this image looks very similar to the "SCARAB" we are running with in-game. I don't know about you guys, but just looking at that one example of concept art gets me far more excited about the game than all of the Engineers screenshots and promotional pieces combined!

This is what I was referring to when I was previously talking about community acceptance of one upgrade path vs another.

I think if they had a team working on SRVs, they'd have released one with 2.1
Same for ships. We know from the SJA affair that they love to micromanage their team around, so I assume no one is working on either at this point.

I'm not buying the whole "wait more", "be patient" and "10 year project" at this point either. Most of their efforts are quite misdirected. For example there have been three mission revamps now - and they're still struggling with it. (weird mission updates, navy missions still missing)

That is why I'm saying they should focus on a few things and finally get them right.

Well said Quineloe!

Looks like you and I are on the same page. [up] The tendency of some in upper management to micromanage projects was obviously not lost on you either! ;) I don't think I would be revealing anything new by reminding everyone of the somewhat dubious reputation Frontier has for its much higher than normal turnaround of its artists and developer talent. These are folks that have a a real problem with being second guessed, and basically interfered with while they are trying to do their work. No one enjoys having to re-do things, but folks in these creative fields enjoy it even less. ;)

Wouldn't be the first time that the shinny happy face directed at the public is a far cry from the reality behind the walls. Office politics aside, I just want a darn game that works and be given a good reason why I should trust what FD is telling us instead of drawing my conclusions based on what they actually produce (or fail to produce) within these updates.

Finding two glaring goofs within minutes of the release of the .03 update isn't helping with instilling that confidence! (Broken Docking Computer and Turret Weapon Control System)

It is easy to abstract a single idea and say when? It's very different when you are developing a game with multiple mechanics to manage, add to, and balance.

The game has a ten year upgrade plan and not without reason, there is a lot the developers want to add to the game, just hop into the design discussion archive to see everything they plan to add, and that does not include new ideas they have discussed since launch. Many items that we do not know about will be getting worked on right now for inclusion in the next Horizons update or the one after.

We can all point to something we would like to see implemented, but they cannot possibly work on everything at once. Some systems take months of work and thousands of man hours to produce, and that’s ignoring bug fixing and balance changes needed elsewhere in the game.

With respect, every developer is more than happy to tell people all the cool things they want to implement, and it counts for precisely zero. ED will be a ten year development cycle if FD manage to attract enough people to invest enough money into the game - it will not be a ten year cycle just because FD say it will.

FD have provided us with their vision of how things will change over the relatively short term - ie the rest of season 2 - and if what you want isn't in there then don't count on getting it. If you are going to pay any attention at all to the stuff that follows the traditional 'oh yes, player controllable skateboards with giraffes on, that is totally rthe sort of thing we want ot include....' then you have obviously missed the larger part of how the games industry has been working since around 1980.

Believe it when you see it in the upcoming patch notes.
