Newcomer / Intro Is there a 3rd person camera view?

Since all I've seen of the game is from the cockpit. This my first post. Game looks great, I was a big fan of Freelancer and the Wing Commander series from back in the day.

Nope, you are glued to the pilot chair like a sellotaped lemming and that is it because apparently a 3rd person view would cause a singularity and crash the universe.

It's been discussed that they would add camera drones for external views, in non-combat situations. The aim is to keep everyone with the pilot's eye view only during combat, and I don't think FD will change their mind on that. But a nice outside view so I cann appreciate my paints when I am not in combat would be awesome!

Meantime, it would require a freelance space journalist who you hire to come take pics of your ship from outside!

As the others say, no 3rd person at all and for some reason a vocal group of people here think its cheating. They are comparing it to shooters where you can see inside buildings and over walls using 3rd person view... However in space you might see past an asteroid? Lol.

Topic has been beat to death, for whatever reason the devs agree with the vocal group.

Thats a real bummer, I really enjoy a 3rd person view in sim-like games. Love it in the IL2 Sturmovik WWII dogfighting sim. Of course I'd be forced to cockpit view only on the realism servers. But still always enjoyed having 3PV for SP gameplay. Guess it's a bit of a tough one in Elite since the game world is persistently online. Maybe have a 3PV servers as an option for players who want it? Who knows, I honestly might not get this game because of this.
