Newcomer / Intro Is there a future with this game?

Hello Commanders,
I was kind of hoping that some of you can give some good news, mainly due to the almost complete silence of information.
3 years and with a river of tears this title has been the best game I have ever played, second to the king of games being "Xcom Apocalypse", God I miss Microprose. So from vanilla to now this game has gone from perfect to a serious train wreck. It feels like we have gone back to early access. I guess one could only say this knowing what it started as, but anyways can any of you techy or otherwise well informed guys please yell if there is any hope that FD can recover this game?
The instability is completely out of control and it has been months with no improvement and FD doesn't seem to be saying much.
I can't take the crash, softboot, relog, crash, hope for the crash report to come up, relog, freeze, crash, exit, delete cache files, relog, crash, a bit of exaggeration here but you get the point so don't sugar coat it, just flat out, is there any REAL plans for a fix anytime soon or is it, truly heartbreaking, time to find a new game?

God I can't believe I just said that, so please throw some kind of good news, please....

You appear to be talking globally about ED, but you've only referred to stability issues, which seem to point to an issue on your end, not FDev's =\

If you're asking if the game is sustainable, yes. There's been plenty of improvements compared to the ED even I started playing not that long ago, with plenty more in development.

If you're asking if your client will be stable again, I can't answer that without knowing what the problem is, but it sounds like your PC/networking needs some TLC. I can count on one hand the number of crashes I've had in 800+ hours, so it's not the base game.

Hate to break it to you, but if you have that many technical problems with the game the culprit is most likely your system and not ED. I've been playing since the beta and I can count the amount of crashes I've had in >1700 hours on one hand. In my experience it is one of the most stable games I've ever played. What is your system (hardware, OS) like?

This game is dead? No. Even the small fact that we see loads of newcomers to these boards can help attest to that. What about those who do 't post, don't use the boards or just lurk? That's just one facet.

Every online game I've played sees someone posting about "the game is dying". Here's a little piece of info you may find interesting:

My first online game was AOL based and could only be played via that ISP. It started free and then they made it a monthly sub. People left. The designers or someone pulled it out of AOL's grasp and it became open to all. It has a player built front end. It now resides on its own server. Its still a sub for premium play. Granted, very few people play but then it was a couple of years old when I first started. In 1997. It's still going.

WoW is stil going. Everquest is still going.

As to stability, mine is rock solid on a three year old rig.

Sorry if I went on a bit but this game is like a new born and, like a fine wine, will only get better with age. Mine's a shiraz. Thanks.

Time to find a new computer maybe. Crashes should be rare indeed.

In your other thread, you identified a possible memory issue. Did you replace the RAM?

What version of Windows are you running? How old is your box?

Does seem most likely an issue at your end - I get maybe a max of 1 CTD a day (often none, and that's in 12 Hr session) - pretty similar to other games I've played.

As to whether there's a future - well, it is set in 3304 ;)

I hope so...I've just bought a new HP Omen with a 1060 to replace my Acer Aspire F15, purely to satisfy my mobile Elite fix! (as the only other game I play these days is Footy Manager & that hardly needs a good GPU)

Also with the deluded, Elite-obsessed old dudes - who think of this game like "the girl that got away", still looking at those old pictures of happier times & pine for a bygone era when their prostates still worked properly - the money should keep rolling in! [big grin]

In the 10 weeks (game time that is which is what near on oh I dont know Im no good at math, Hrs but its a lot im sure) I dont recall one crash. Network errors yes but game crash nope. Which is odd as some of my other games crash due to driver crash's. FO4 was doing it more than a working girl on a busy night..

I remember one or two CTD during the betas, otherwise the game runs perfectly stable for me (during the last year, 99% in VR even). Network disconnects are another issue, but rather rare lately. 16 weeks game time in total - last time I checked, I usually try to avoid looking at the counter ;)

O7,

Elite: Dangerous is among the most stable games I've ever played. With 1600+ hours in Elite, I have had less than 5 crashes in my time in the game. Sounds like the problem is at your end, OP, not with Elite.

Either people here play solo or with few friends.

Stability is better than the dark days of CTD when jumping to a new system in a wing or CTD when in rez sites and a NPC pops (in a wing) but i'd hardly call the game amazingly stable.

Play in a group of 4 or less and you will have few problems.

Sorry OP but the last time the game was that unstable for me the fault was down to the archaic wires between my house and the internet. I do get crashes to desktop of course the last one was only a few weeks ago but they are rare things.

So from my perspective there is a long future for Elite Dangerous.

............ please throw some kind of good news, please....

Good News - The game is great.

Bad News - your machine is not.

If you are having the issues you say and are not exaggerating, you really, REALLY need to get your machine sorted. E D is amazingly stable and I use it in open, solo and PG (lots of contacts at CGs). The only crashes I have had were during beta and a couple at initial roll-out of major releases. (I run windo$e7.)

Seriously mate, don't blame the game if your gear is so trashed with duff memory, drivers, bloatware, miners, etc etc. Get it sorted.

Here's an honest answer:

(1) Stability

The game is quite stable on the PC - four of us meet up Sunday nights and livestream two of more hours of gameplay mostly without issues.

But on XBOX (and PS4) there are some major stability issues, like two people joining you in SRVs causing a hard crash.

Aside from that, most of the other gameplay is stable aside from minor things like missions and modules being removed when they don't work as planned, and the bugged Ram Tah mission.

(2) Does the game have a future

I think this will be answered when (a) the q4 update releases and (b) FDev lets us know what they have planned in 2019.

Before then, I really don't know if we have enough information to answer that question?

Is the "Beyond" ED's swan song, or a basic cleanup and prep prior to a major expansion?

Yes, I did look into the memory issue and I did find an issue with memory test. After consulting with manufacturer there is no issue but instead an issue with win10pro memory testing software with specific board and memory type, thank you again for the help with that question about hardware. After giving all machine specs to FD through ticket their conclusion was a known cache issue with 3.0 update, but nothing else was said nor is there anything said in known issues via bug report forums.
As far as all other posts I would like to thank you guys for info with stability feedback from your end.
Hardware is considered fine and even op as per FD's feedback with ticket and as far as machine as I said in original post everything has ran perfectly until 3.0, even other titles still run solid.
It is good to hear that the attraction is still bringing new players in so sorry for any confusion but I was hoping that anyone had any good news concerning time line with updates or any update information at all due to the silence.

Thank you again Mistohise, your feedback did help with a number of tests thus I feel more comfortable with machines performance and health.

As far as updates are concerned, when the Beyond series was revealed Frontier said there will be a major Q4 update this year. with 2 lesser ones from 3.0 onwards. So if they are evenly spaced, perhaps we may see 3.1 at the end of Q2 which is the end of next month...maybe lol.

There is speculation 3.1 will include the Krait ship that was in the original games, but as always the Devs add in plenty of other QoL upgrades and bug fixes both visible and under the hood. So perhaps you may find whatever issues 3.0 brought to your hardware will be either fixed or improved for 3.1. See how it goes and contact support if there are still problems after that.

A few years back during Windows 7 I had similar issues with a particular MB and well known memory brand. They were all solved by switching to Kingston. I know prices are stupid at the moment but all I can tell you is every Kingston memory module I've used in various machines have for me been totally rock solid with zero compatibility or software issues.

I'll keep lookin down the hole with my issue so thank you for your input Conde, every bit of info helps..o7 see ya in the black.

Yeah, the gal map crash is annoying and really needs fixing (Soon [tm]), but heartbreaking? you need to harden your heart (or work in software development...)

...time to find a new game?
It's always time to find a new game, and over the last 3 or 4 years I've found several - Witcher 3 (awesome - probably one of the best RPG ever - (disclaimer: i've not played Divinity...)), Senua's Sacrifice (get's a bit samey, but damned fine nonetheless), Batman:enemy within (one of the best written games in a while), ME:A (hmmm. it's not up to scratch, but it's still pretty good and I spent many hours on it...) plus several others I forget. I still keep coming back to E: D though; there's nothing like jumping in your Cobra 3 and blasting off into the black. :)
