Is there a game similar to Elite Dangerous but set in the golden age of sail?

Naval action is just like age-of-sail Elite - people are complaining about grinding, ganking and the ocean being miles wide but inches deep! :)

There's some AAA title in the world of ye olde piracy coming out soon. Can't for the life of me remember the name though off hand. It looked good though from what I saw of it.

The closest I can think of other than Sid Meiers pirates would be Sea Of Thieves. Its closer to guns of Icarus than Elite but still kinda similar and brilliant nonetheless:

If you're on FB we launched a wider Sea Of Thieves community a little while ago. It's only in alpha Testing at the moment (and nobody is allowed to talk about how good it may or may not be) but while not quite Elite (it's good good sailing mechanics, very good from waht we've seen in videos, but everything's quite cartoony at the moment) it does have multicrew already :D

Other than that, Pirates! for sure :D

I noticed winds of trade recently, its fairly new I think, looks like it could be a nice little single player game - http://store.steampowered.com/app/576260/

Naval action is certainly fun, I was planning to go back to it at some point in the future, I just wish they would add the crew to the ship visually so I can see them on deck doing their jobs, because without them they feel like little model boats. I would also like to see more events at sea to challenge your sailing skills.

"Sid Meier's Pirates!" if you can get through 16bit graphics, you're in loads of fun, as suggested. I think I even played a clone of it on an Atari 65XE back in the day, as the original started on C64 :)

Also I've heard that Assassin's Creed IV - Black Flag is pretty "piratey" but it is still on my "to play" list, so I wouldn't know and I won't spoil it for myself by looking it up. According to wikipedia:
Unlike previous games, gameplay elements focus more on ship-based exploration of the seamless open world map, while also retaining the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. Multiplayer also returns, albeit with only land-based modes and settings. The game spans across the Caribbean with the three main cities of Havana, Nassau and Kingston along with numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. Players have the option to harpoon large sea animals and hunt land animals. For the first time in the series, naval exploration is a major part of an Assassin's Creed game, where Edward Kenway captains the Jackdaw, a brig he captures from a Spanish fleet.
Here's a video if you're interested:

Black Flag is still my favourite AC title. Still good to play even now

Yeah although I didn't finish it myself I felt it was a decent game that gave the piracy side of things some justice. Ultimately it was a little too "open world" samey for my liking.

Sid Meier's Pirates is on sale on Steam right now, for 2$ or something silly like that. Get it :)
As it was said above - if you can get past the fact that it's an old game you'll have a blast playing it.

Edit: It's 2004 edition. Or "remaster" as they call it these days. Same thing pretty much to older versions.
