Is there a trick to getting those tip-off messages?

Another related question:

Does the tip-off you get vary depending on the faction you get it from? Or are they all completely random, such that you can discover all existing tip-offs by grinding (ugh) one faction?

Didn't see any relation to the faction I got the tip-off from, IDK about grinding one faction. Probably would work but take a lot of time.

I was told the tip-offs are randomly generated and held in a database (much like regular missions) and then, basically, handed out one-at-a-time.
Thing is, if a bunch of people all trigger a tip-off at roughly the same time, they'll all get the same tip-off - which can lead to a bit of a "gumball rally" to get to the prize.
More likely, though, is that only a couple of people will ever trigger one at the same time and you won't meet them because of instancing and, of course, that you might not go after the tip-off at the same time.

Might be fun if there was some kind of "super tip-off" which was, say, sent to every commander who qualified at a random time each day.
When you got one you'd know that the objective WAS worth the effort so you'd be willing to go after it immediately and there'd only be one "prize" for whoever got there first.
And so would everybody else who received it, which could lead to some jolly japes.

My last one came from "Mysterious Stranger" and had a 27 day expiration.
So it wasn't clearly related to anything, lol...
It seems kind of random but I've gotten a few (3-4) recently, and have been somewhat in the same area.
But I had a couple while just wandering around too.
Sorry, not exactly helpful...

What Jmanis said. Do lots of missions in the same system, with Factions you are allied with. That's when they start popping up.

Particular factions don't issue them. They're anonymous, and the 'reward' is always something you can hand in at any Contacts panel.

Yeh... I found if you do them for many different factions in different places, it doesnt seem to help.

You hust need to do loooots of missions. I got two last night, have probably done upwards of 100 missions in two days.

That seems like an ungodly amount of missions.

I don't think I even *can* do that many without silly exploits.

Usually I'm taking a handful at a time, and it takes me 30-60 minutes to finish them all.

In probably 1500 hours I've played Elite, I've received in total 2 tipoffs. The first time I deleted the message by accident, the second time I received like 3 all at once for the same location, I still have no idea what triggered them.

Hi there,

I've sprinked some rep to people who I noticed had pertinent comments...

And I'll address the below:

There's at least two kinds of tip offs I get, one is from submitting 6-8 missions at once with an allied faction, the other are random missions that are offered randomly in space. There aren't many, in one of the livestreams (the Dav Stott BGS one I think) it was stated that the initial trigger for these is to be in system for 15 minutes, but nothing else.

That wasn't tip off messages.

It's not enough to be allied, you have to have the reputation bar full. And if they are part of a superpower, then you need to be at 100% reputation with them as well. When you have no reputation left to gain from a mission, you have a chance at getting a tip off.

So for independent factions, this takes a lot of work but when it's done you'll get plenty of tip offs. For superpower aligned factions, it is easier to get up there but you need to make up for the superpower reputation decay. That's why it is easy to never get any tip offs.

You do not need to be at 100% rep with any factions.

I could tell you what spawns tip offs, but it's really not that interesting...

Thanks,
Dom

Pre-2.4, sure, it was an ungodly amount. I'd maybe get a tipoff in a week.

Post 2.4 you're guaranteed to get a variety of missions which will include ones you're interested in doing. For me, in my faction's current state at the moment, these are:
- Source cargo missions
- Data delivery
- Cargo delivery
- Donation
- Planetary scans; and when I feel like it
- Assasinations

Between two stations I can hit the max of 20 no problems, and my trading python is also tanked to deal with most assasination missions. It's really brought having multiple stations in a system back to the fore.

Actually, I would find it fascinating! [up]

Yeah I'm positive you need to do a few missions, from one system, and be in that system for over 15 mins (I can't work out if that's 15 mins in total including revisits, or 15 mins as in you are literally in one place for 15 mins.)

I DO know that while grinding Fed rank, and repeatedly visiting the same stations over and over, I was flooded with top off missions... so if you want to see some... grind some rank :D

Ha!

I just want to know why I haven't been getting them. I have a working theory (I don't grind missions and hardly even stack them) but it would be nice to get some confirmation.

My guess would be along the lines of what other people have said...you have to be allied and ‘active’ with a faction. I’ve had a few, mostly either wrecked ships or angry, angry bases.
