Is there a way to identify inhabited systems?

I'm exploring the galaxy at the moment with a nebula as target. At a certain point of my journey i didn't encounter any inhabited systems at all anymore, and i wonder if this is just the region i'm in or if i'm too far out (around 400LY from LHS 3447). Anyway, i got loads of system data to sell (and worried i won't be able to due to the old bug), some cargo to get rid of on a black market and a damaged ship that could also use an integrity check.

So, is there a way to identify inhabited system, or will i encounter some sooner or later anyway? Thanks!

Yes, turn on allegiances in the galaxy map. If the system shows up as grey (none) there are no stations, if it is colored (Red: Empire, Blue:Fed, Green:Indi, Orange:Alliance) it has stations. There are no stations outside the 300 LY civilized bubble.

In the galaxy map, go to the view tab and set 'show by size = population'. Then move the population 'min' slider up 1 blip; all uninhabited systems will disappear.

This is not quite accurate. It is possible to have a system fall within the control of a faction but have no occupants. The most telling view within Galaxy Map is the "Economy" view, which will show no dot for a system with no stations. But even then, given the number of outposts out there that have no commodity market, I suppose it's possible to have one with an outpost that's not yet started a market. These would most likely be seen on the fringes of inhabited space.

I believe there is also a "Government" type option to view, which would be probably about as accurate since it shows up even for Anarchy systems.

Thanks guys, that helped alot. I find it quite a shame though that there is a "border of civilization", i'm not even a day out if i were to jump back without exploring, so why didn't mankind go further?

You won't find any that far out. All inhabited space is three or four hundred ly across.

I'll have to look when I can get in game tonight. But there are a few resource-rich but uninhabited systems that were claimed by the Feds the last time I looked (Gamma).
