Is There Room For A True Cloaking Device In ED?

Don't you essentially have a cloaked ship if it has a black paint job and silent running?

I've only seen this work for a couple of ships and those were offensive builds. What I'm suggesting would be used more for defense.

I know it's not needed in the game and some have said FD has shunned any further thought of it but I still think it would be cool to imagine. A lot of the tech in ED seems to be very basic for how far in the future it is. Not a bad thing but kind of "bland" sometimes.
 
They already added a cloaking device. It's called Tactical Graphite. You can get it in the paint job store.
Exactly what we're already doing ;) shame the lights on the hulls of many ships continue to light you up like a xmas tree regardless, and can't be turned off.
 
I'd love to see this too tbh. I found your post by random chance from google whilst wondering the same. As you say, give the cloak a short run time, like two or three minutes before, say, overheating. Make it impossible to fire whilst cloaked, have cloak and de cloak times fairly slow making it a target whilst transitioning, weaken shields perhaps, or perhaps the penalty is for the ship to need to be shieldless. Limit the cloak to small ships like cobra, viper etc in order to give them some more role in the game. They'd be great for recon, spying, smuggling. Would really really like to see this in the game!

How would you guys feel about this? It would have to be balanced for smuggling, pirating, and
combat and that would require a lot of thinking but I do think it would be cool to have. Silent running is neat and all but I feel like it should be part of an actual cloaking system.

I envision something where:
-it has a very short activation time
-you're unable to be seen by sight
-you show as a very faint "blip" on scanners for a time
-your location on the scanner is dynamic
-it could only be used in normal space or super cruise.
-limited to ten second cloak
-it would only allow for very limited thrust capability before your heat signature shows on scanners
-single use

Obviously It would definitely be very expensive and take up a module slot but I don't think shields or weapons should be active while cloaked or immediately after. Utilities maybe.

I usually stick to combat but I'm beginning to feel for traders especially now with the engineers. Stacking shield boosters with SCBs on top of prismatics just feels boring. With cloaking interdictions might be a bit more interesting instead of boost boost boom or boost boost jump, we could at least have a game of cat and mouse.

I think it would be a great idea but I would only use it to get my exploration data back to a station as im fed up of spending hours upon hours exploring the far reaches of the galaxy only to be destroyed and lose it all as soon as I enter occupied space, I think that 1 - you can use it indefinitely 2 - can't be used in combat( can't fire cloaked and can't cloak once in combat. 3 - can be used in supercruise and normal flight but not in atmospheres. 4 - should cost about 1,000,000 Cr and take up a large slot in ships 5 - should be a true cloak (not detectable in any way, visually or electronically)

Okay so I'm going to dig through the graveyard soil here and kind of focus on this bit - some parts bigger ships cost in the neighborhood of 50,000,000 and that's not even the most expensive. That kind of cost wouldn't really be a factor in balance, really.

This kind of mechanic doesn't really have a place in the game right now, because it would add a whole new scale to the balancing being done.
 
I would like a module that disguises the signature of your ship as something else while in SC.

Imagine flying a Sidewinder with an optional internal that makes you appear as a 'Conda when scanned in supercruise... Or a 'Conda with a Hauler's signature.

Perhaps have a visual 'glitch' in the image of the targeted ship, a hint that things may not be what they seem.

I think the logical progression (I can't believe this thread was dug up) would be masking cargo or passenger manifests to start, as a smaller version of any sort of sensor-deception for smuggling specifically
