Horizons is this a subscription?

Not a sub. It means you get all the updates within that season (however long it lasts). I wouldn't quantify it as yearly or any set periodicity.

No, well not in the traditional sense. It's a season of content, horizons is season 2 (it does require you to have season 1/base game).

Once you've brought it you will always have access to that content even when season 3,4,5... are released.

Any future seasons will have to be purchased but they're optional. For example, if you choose not to buy season 3 (the next season), you can still play season 1and 2, you'd just miss out on whatever new features were added.

I for one really hate this nomenclature (From its earliest implementations in many other products) it's pure consumerist-driven marketing bull.

It alludes to things that really aren't at all represented by the phrasiology. How is "Horizons" a 'season'? It's not aperiod of time, it's a product. The product may evolve over a duration (ewith what they term 'expansions', but this is just more confusing redefinition of existing concepts.

In the past, you would license a base game, then license Expansions separtely (at cost) - by changing the definition to suit, FD (and they aren't alone in this so I am not entirely laying any fault upon them for needing to manitain a competitive viabiltiy) are implanting the suggestion that you now get multiple Expansions by purchasing ONE "season"

Really, the "Season" is the Expansion pack, and it's drip fed.

Like the words "Pre-Order" - sure everyone understands the concept of paying in advance to ensure you get a copy, and it can be worthwhile if you are flush well in advance - but why are there 'pre orders' on digital versions? Servers do not have limited copies (yes license keys may be limited by millions but support techs can easily arrange for any problems there to be sorted swiftly) on shelves that will sell out.
Besides "Pre-Order" actually literally defines a prior order. Just an order, not a purchase. Why has it become so acceptable to charge full cost (I know there are meagre discounts 'pre-order bonus' - I am more referring to the fact that placing an order for something in conventional 'old fashioned' shopping would require at most a nominal charge for the administration of such).

Yeah I'm old fashioned and ranting a little, but it irks me that the rampant consumerist mindset is such that kids are growing up with the notion that this is the norm and blindly accepting these things. The power of the CUSTOMER (not to be a consumer) is so eroded and although this is intended and enforced by the 'system', customers should really take a stand against it rather than submitting and letting the market dictate to the end user. Maybe it is too late. Oh go on, sell me a new iThing, my old one is a month out of date...

If you think of it as winter, spring, summer and autumn it doesn't make sense, but if you think of it as a season of a series (like it's meant) it does.

It would only be a "subscription through the backdoor" if it was mandatory to be able to play.
And that's not the case.

You miss the point. It's still trying to make you think you are paying for "a season of expansions" and getting a better deal than paying for AN expansion drip-fed.

Indeed. The only think I'd add is that if season two adds advantages to ships that are insurmountable. If you are strictly pve player and play only solo or private group, this isn't a problem. If you'd like to be anything besides cannon fodder, then you need season two. Even the NPCs can be rough on base players.

No... you can continue to play the game without buying any seasons. Is it a replacement of a subscription fee? Yes you playing the game costs FD money, so paying once isn't going to net them any profit. They need a continuous stream of money to keep the servers going and profit. So they charge for a yearly-ish set of expansions and charge for cosmetics. The community overwhelmingly voted this over a subscription fee back during the kickstarter.

As far as the disadvantages... if you aren't paying your keep then you will be at a disadvantage, any other MMO would prevent you from playing entirely.

Well, I got the impression it was a subscriptioin from the terminology. I didn't really think it could be, but I had to be sure. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
