Is using a flight control stick or game pad better than keyboard?

I've been using a keyboard and track pad since I started elite, and I do okay with it, but I've watched some youtube videos where people are able to consistently pulling off fine manoeuvres, FA off and seem to be using fixed weapons with ease. For those of you who have used keyboard, flight stick and/or game pad, which do you find gave you better ship and targeting control?

HOTAS for deffo mate
its what the pilot in game uses in each ship and now in the buggy/srv....if you want authentic immersion its the way to play...and with headtracking obviously

Started on keyboard....moved to x52 and it was a whole different world. I run a X-55 Rhino now and would never look back. The thought of having to use the K/M setup after a stick does not even compute.

Thrustmaster T flight Hotas X is so cheap that you just have to try it, and it's more reliable than many that cost way more.
Been abusing mine since the Betas and it's still working perfectly.

I started with Ye Olde Mowse and Keyes, and did respectably, but a full CH setup is just too cool for school.

Yup, and pair it with Joystick Curves and you have a terrific setup. I also have been on the Hotas X since the first betas.

I have a HOTAS but dont bother with it. I would rather be able to sit on the sofa with my laptop than be banished to a man cave.

I am sure a HOTAS FA-Off ninja would cream me, but I dont PvP, so it is a moot point. Keyboard only (no mouse) is ample for PvE

I picked up a HOTAS specifically for elite and I play in the living room on a 100" projection, its consuming to say the least. In a 1-bedroom sized living room of a Brooklyn NY apartment, the screen fits perfectly in my field of vision. I'm not sure of your living room setup, but I have decent success with nothing more than a large lap board that sits just in front of my couch which holds the HOTAS and keyboard comfortably.. Sometimes its on my lap, sometimes its on the table just in front of me, and sometimes I stretch my legs and rest the board on them. Moral of the story... I think it depends more on the screen you're playing on than not... (but I highly recommend trying it out, it may not be as bad as you think)

..As far as my living room gaming setup, my projection, an optoma h181x, is displaying on a wall w/o a screen inputting 1080p@60hz. I am consumed with absolutely no qualms about the image quality.. ...And being that the projector is a HT projector, the operating fan is nearly silent!

As far as the topic of the forum ( :D )
I find that you can master controls from any device, the primary difference is how you develop your skill with the controller whether it is a combo gamepad/mouse, gamepad, or HOTSAS. I've tried the gamepad and was feeling like the lack of buttons seriously hindered my gameplay where as my x52pro has all the buttons in the world to utilize. A gamepad and mouse would have been the least expensive alternative (and not by much when the controller is an XBOX ONE controller) but I Am happy I invested in the HOTAS, the gameplay is second to none and it is awesome to see the exact flight stick in the game being controlled as you're controlling yours!

Got an X52 Pro for my birthday, and while it is fun and immersive, it's a LOT more physically demanding than KB/M (or KB/Trackball like I use on my laptop). I also find that I'm still way better with KB/M than the flight stick.

You definitely need a proper set-up, too. If you are having to lift your arms up to use the flight stick and throttle it's going to wear you down, fast. They should be at resting arm level.

The X52 Pro also has annoying detents on the throttle, 'notches' you have to push past to get to 0 or 100 throttle, and removing them will void your warranty. I believe the non-Pro (which has lower build quality) and the X-55 do not have these detents.

As a result, my X52 Pro gets very little use now.

Also: if you are prone wrist pain or carpal tunnel, absolutely forget about using one.
