Is volcanism broken, resource-wise?

After extensive driving on a planet, I have ONLY gotten sulphur from any vent. Crystalline chunks, shard, piceous cobble- always sulphur. Well over a dozen tries, and the higher end volcanism nodes only ever game the exact same thing, the most common element drop on the planet, 100% of the time.\

Trying to get selenium, of course.

The OLD resource nodes, the rocks that explode and toss out a few items, those seem to have the normal distribution. Including a chunk of selenium.

At this point, with everything we learned - you may safely assume that if something seems broken it most likely is.

I still remember when in Horizons all the Points of Interest had only Tea as a cargo.

Vulcanism works differently now. The coloured areas indicate a predominance of the minerals from which comes the colour. Green for Iron, Cyan is Sulphur.

Are typical minerals are back in the Mesidorit, Metallic Meteorites, and other shootable resources that are scattered across the surface as it was before Horizons.

Yeah, after flying around several planets, I have yet to see any kind of volcanic features despite landing on areas that the DSS claimed they should be there. I can't help but wonder how this is going to affect material grinding. It was already boring enough to do when you had POIs telling you where to land, but at least with that setup I could guarantee that I would find some materials there. Now I feel like on top of the grind for the mats themselves, you'll be "grinding" to even find a suitable spot to gather them.

Dude, I SAMPLED the volcanism resource nodes, repeatedly. ALL the different nodes only gave SULPHUR.

Been to a number of geological sites in Odyssey. They do work differently but they tend to pretty extensive when found. The RNG however is all busted so whatever the most abundant G1 thing it rolls is what you get from everything, just like you found. It's almost certainly not intended.

It's easier right now to talk about the things that aren't broken.

It really is not that bad. Follow the wave scanner in the SRV. As it stands now when you find them the shootables are WAY more abundant at least in the 4 or 5 times I've tried looking.

Alright, fair... but my point was more: how long will you spend driving around looking for these things? In Horizons I land at a POI and I can guarantee that I will find dozens of material nodes in the area. If I have to spend half an hour driving around to find even a single node, then I'm still gathering faster in Horizons.

I have no idea man. It's going to be different. Just telling you what I see so far. If the area is highlighted as having geo activity then it never seems too far to follow the wave scanner to cluster of it. But that's just a very small sample from one guy and 4 landings, I'll just say that so far I have not spent anywhere near 1/2 hour driving to find them. Maybe 10 at the outside but I didn't stopwatch it. I will say that I personally will love not needing to pack up / enter SC / leave SC / land / unpack to get to the next cluster of stuff.

Yeah, these were really bad when Odyssey first dropped, but have greatly improved in abundance to where it almost feels as if they are more abundant now than in Horizons. In fairness, I never farmed mats at the geological sites or crystal shards or anything like that. Always gathered them from driving aroound.

Geological sites and Biologicals are no longer the mats farms they came to be in the second half of Horizons. I think it was a compromise, they have now gone back to their original vision.

And if I am a DUDE, this DUDE picked up nothing but Iron in a site with highly iron oxide coloured sites, and Sulphur in the others... All hail the DUDE!

Currently they are only generating one mat per body, but in fact I think it may change mat type if you relog, this is something I am going to check when I get a chance. I have got Iron from one body, carbon from another, it is a bug and I think FDEV are looking at it, it's been reported, hopefully the fix won't take to long.

It's been broken since Odyssey launch. The plant-based ones behave the same (i.e. broken, have tested and confirmed), and I would presume the crystals as well.

If you need materials NOW, you can switch to Horizons and do it in the old mode.
that's fair enough, though (obviously) hardly a desirable state-of-affairs...
i just hope the issue gets fixed before "the great merge" when we'll essentially be losing ED:H, though given the state of the issue tracker for this (not a lot of folks helping by reporting on it; 'still in "confirming" stage :( ), i'm not feeling particularly optimistic...
unless maybe this all is actually WAD and we're no longer supposed to be able to get better than grade 1s from the usual nodes and instead are expected to hunt for outcroppings, meteors, and the like...? certainly if that is in fact the case it would be good to know, but given the bent of FDEVs comms i don't expect that hearing officially one way or the other is at all likely... :(

If it were one material per 'area' it'd be pretty useful. Once you find the area/material you're looking for you can collect as many as you need. But if it's one material per body? Ick, yeah, that's definitely a bug. Relogging should never be necessary.
