Yes it is a thing. But you could go to the crashed cobra, pick up the G5 and trade it.

I think scanning wakes around the stations and distribution centres is quite a bit faster when you only need a couple data mats per category, tbh. And you can still shuffle them around at the trader.
But Jameson's Cobra re-logging grind doesn't require any brainpower and piloting, so I guess that's why people prefer it.

I just always carry a Wake Scanner and pick one off every time I leave a station. Always have plenty for everything. Zero grind.

As someone who recently spent the better part of a week at distribution centres scanning wakes, I can assure you that the Jameson site is faster.

Neither is particularly engaging.
