It would appear that the console release will be delayed beyond Autumn 2021

"We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change."

I don't read Braben's announcement quite so negatively. Taken at face value*, it does state that the plan remains to bring Odyssey to consoles in some form, albeit with some carefully worded haziness about which consoles and when. And form the point of view of efficiency, it makes sense to fix Odyssey on PC before progressing the port to consoles (no point in spending Dev hours porting Code that's going to be replaced later).

So I don't get the impression it's over yet. But I do hope FDev are being straight with us - and we're all entitled to be wary, given their track record.

* I know what you're going to say!

they said exactly the same thing above developing for consoles would also benefit PC

the only (tiniest glimmer of) hope I have for consoles is that Odyssey is clearly an FPS and that is console territory

I wholeheartedly believe that Star Citizen is an
Onionhead
fund.
Counterpoint:

The longer and better SC does it's thing the less relevant the criticisms of SC AND ED as a thing becomes.

Frontier has allowed ED to fall behind the power curve for it's genre. Sure it has a reliable flight model/aesthetic and is on PC AND Consoles.

But if FDev wants to shift gears and NOT develop for consoles while developing shotty content ONLY for PC then they're actively challenging SC's market niche and at this point they are WOEFULLY behind SC in development of content volume and quality.

ED's only hope as a direct competitor to SC is that SC just shuts down. Braban and FDev at this point aren't trying to move the genre forward, they're just actively hoping for their competitors to fail in order to capture their market share.

I would also say that one big advantage Elite had so far is that it's available on consoles, whereas Star Citizen is only available on PC. So Frontier, in theory, has a much bigger reach of potential players and customers. Elite is even on Xbox Game Pass which surely boosts player numbers, and more engagement most certainly leads to more spending (either ARX or buying the full game).

Throwing this advantage away and dropping consoles is a very bad move. Frontier essentially drops a big part of Elite's community and market, and I agree that if they want to get Odyssey's act together and somehow save Elite only on PC then they're suddenly at a disadvantageous position compared to the competition. It not only maddens me as a long-time console Elite player but I also think this approach will damage Elite on PC as well. If anything, the console playerbase could have been a saving grace as there's no real competition on these platforms (No Man's Sky is interesting but is fundamentally different in my opinion). It could have been a lifeline to introduce a console Beta or early access - ironically enough that's how Elite debuted on Xbox in the first place, in the Game Preview programme. They could've done the same with Odyssey, releasing a half-baked version in Game Preview and build from there, with real-world experience and feedback even on old consoles, helping optimisation tremendously on both PC and console hardware.

But no, instead they just dropped consoles from their plans, restricting their own optimisation opportunities, their playerbase, their pool of feedback, losing a meaningful amount of playerbase, losing on markets where they had no direct competition and collecting a huge amount of negative reputation in the process.

I'm not out any money on Odyssey, so they can take their time, and get it right.
If I feel the need to be angry at a game with it's angry community, I'll go back to playing World of Tanks.

My biggest concern is at what point will Odyssey be polished enough that they decide to port it to us? Bugs linger in this game for years and certainly Odyssey will have loads of them regardless but as slow as they fix things I really wonder how long this is going to take.

Good spot, yet another unknown for the console platform users that in theory can be used to delay porting indefinitely.
