Its a niche game

What the hell are you talking about? I can think it's a niche game without being a fanboy. See my sig or my posting history.

Try seeing HIS.. There's a reason I don't see his neverending series of negative posts unless somebody quotes them...

It might be niche but it's a big driver of hardware purchases.

Some of the setups some CMDR's have are glorious!

There's no point in buying hardware for the sake of it, apart from the fun of buying hardware for the sake of it :D

Part of the fun of Elite, for me at least, is having friends call and say "Can I try that space game out a bit more? Oh - and can you fix my laptop please - and do you still have that spare joystick?"

As long as they bring beer, of course ;)

You can ignore those. Also, the better the feedback, whether bad or not, the less of that you will see.

The game is inherently niche because the audience is niche. There is a reason publishers don't like touching the 'Space Sim' genre, because it's a risky niche.

It's not niche though, is it? Elite 84 created a genre.....inspired a 1000 space games after it...it was Cod1, CIV1, Eldersrolls Arena etc

Every single game ever made has been designed to sell as many copies as possible
Ah, so 2.4 is going to be a Tetris mode, then - with almost 500 million sales on tens of platforms, clearly brightly coloured falling blocks is exactly what Elite Dangerous is missing.

Nearly all games are niche games these days, the thing is being a niche game isn't or shouldn't be a derogatory term. There are 7.5b people in the world, some of them play RPG's, I still sometimes play D&D (the actual sitting around a table throwing dice version), others only play twitch games, you only have to appeal to vanishingly small percentage of the worlds population for a game to be a runaway success, but you can never appeal to all of them (assuming here that the "all of them" I am discussing are people who have computers and play computer games). To be honest I think FDEV is stretching themselves a bit to appeal to a broader group than necessary. Personally I would have very happily played ED even if it only offered a narrower base, exploration, trading, mining, that way they could have concentrated on that smaller base gameplay and made it much better.

You could even say, I guess, that I am concentrating on a niche gameplay activity in ED and basically ignoring everything that doesn't interest me. I am happy in my niche :D

Seeing this pop up on the forums a lot recently

It isn't

FD are here for the money, they want to sell as many copies as possible, to as many people as possible

It's a weak excuse for a lack of depth

Elite Dangerous is made to be bought, not played.

Developers of niche games still want to sell copies and make money. They're just targeting a smaller market than some developers do.

It's critically important for somebody developing a niche game to actually remember that they're developing a niche game. A niche game which tries to go too "mainstream" will almost invariably end up in an awkward middle ground where it alienates its niche fans without successfully catering to the masses.

We're already seeing a little of those harmful effects through Frontier's increasing focus on combat and gimmicks. The original target market is unhappy with the lack of new content for things like trading and exploring, while the new market they're trying to attract is unhappy with the delayed gratification inherent in the core design.

Excellent post.

Rep to you sir +

It is niche.

Space Sims died out years ago, we haven't had a good main stream space sim since before Freelancer.

ED is an attempt to reboot the genre along with SC.

So what would add "depth" for you?

Here's some highly requested features:

- NPC multicrew
- Non-combat roles for multicrew
- Integrate CQC into the main game so players can do CQC while traveling.
- Guilds, guild chat, guild bank, guildhall.
- Territory control for player run guilds
- Player housing and base construction such as an outpost or player owned megaship
- Thargoids and other aliens with their own bases, stations to interact with in combat and peaceful ways.
- Improve Powerplay so that the system state changes and really reflects the system state.
- Missions for Wings
- Bigger ships that dock outside stations.
- Orrery system map
- Mouth animations for player characters.
- Space legs

Lol im confused, it IS a niche game. Ubisoft, you know them? Think we all know full well they are in it for the money, yet they created Silent Hunter 1 2 3 and 4. That was a niche game aimed at a very niche crowd which for that reason has a very small but avid following with Subsim.

Microsoft, they love money right, made Flight Simulator, aimed at a niche crowd.

Just because a company is doing it to make money dosent make a game "not niche".

Maxfactor are in it to make money right? Why do they only target woman with their products i wonder?!

Ah, it is niche, but arguably X3, certainly in Terran Conflict & possibly Albion Prelude guise is every bit as good, it's something that I hope would port well into a multiplayer environment.

Yeah, because the original Elite, a record-selling game which focussed on space pew-pew, was such a niche game that totally didnt focussed on combat. Where do people get these ideas? Elite never was a 'niche game', and elite always had combat front, left and center. Every ED trailer focussed on combat, the game is named after a combat rank. Can we just stop the 'the core elite audience isn;'t interested in combat' nonsense?

As for the rest: whether its 'niche' or not is purely based on how many people are interested. It means nothing more. So something is either niche or not, you cant have a non-niche game with low sales, or niche games with high sales. The OP is terribly confused about words again. Not sure why he doesnt just stops bothering with the fluff and makes his point:

"Hello, I dont like the game."

Would save everyone some time. :p
