It's all gone a bit Pete Tong - Help

Well, I'm really struggling with getting this game set up. Pure self-induced idiocy and general ineptitude are to blame. Right, I'm trying to use a Thrustmaster T Flight X HOTAS. I downloaded a profile from off here and got it in the right folder, and was able to select it. It appears to do what it should, but, in the process, I seem to have lost the F12 Centre View command. F12 now does nothing, and I'm sat behind the pilot's seat with my head stuck through the sunroof.

Pretty certain I've unchecked a box or something whilst in options. So, to make matter worse, I tried to correct things myself, and seem to have drifted further from the solution. I think I may have figured I didn't need any of the mouselook stuff, seeing as I've got a HMD, but am now thinking that I was wrong. What, exactly, needs to be selected in order for Centre View to work in the Rift?

The whole thing is really not going well, as I then decided to try out VoiceAttack, figuring it might make like easier for me. I downloaded VoiceAttack this morning with the intention of evaluating it, and see if I could make sense of it for using with Elite. I couldn't, so spent an hour or so on my laptop watching youtube tutorials etc. Feeling a bit more like I was in with a chance, I returned to my gaming pc, fired up VoiceAttack to be greeted with an error message followed by a "Your 21 days are up..............Time to register........................... God Bless" . My 21 days were closer to 21 minutes, lol. I've sent them an email, so hopefully that'll get sorted.

The short amount of time I've spent actually PLAYING Elite has been amazing. I am totally blown away by the entire experience. Unfortunately, I've spent way longer whipping the HMD on and off, trying to figure out what the bloody hell is going on?

If anyone can help me solve the F12 crisis, I'd be most grateful. That is my biggest problem at the moment. In fact, is there a way of returning the entire game to default settings? Then I can start wrecking it from scratch again :)

Check your bindings in the options menu. Possible the profile you downloaded has the re-center VR option mapped to something other than F12. You can map it to whatever you like though.

I should say too that it's worth spending some time getting familiar with the various controls mentioned in the bindings list, it's a bit tedious at first but worth the effort and many of those controls you will want to be using eventually. Head look you don't really need if you're in VR though.

This game certainly takes some time to get comfortable with, and the complex control scheme is part of the reason, but it's worth it!

Press Esc. Go into options, Controls, open the Miscellaneous (+) and find the Reset HMD Orinetation command - set a handy button on your joystick or keyboard to recenter your view whenever you need it.

I use the spacebar - its easy to find and right in front of me even in the Rift.

Don't forget you can also use the reset view function built in to the Rift - use your Oculus Remote to go to the Oculus Home screen then go into settings and then select Reset View. EDIT: if you press the remote's Back button when in game it takes you straight to the settings page.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll hopefully get it sorted in-game with Plan A, but, if it comes to nowt, then I'll heed your sage advise. Otherwise, I'm sure it will come in come in handy further on down the line. Much appreciated :)

Best to go with the in-game command (for any game), as individual game viewpoints can differ from the default Oculus Home sitting-on-the-mat-looking-at-cushions.

Eat yer toast, and get int' cockpit. :D

I'm using the T Flight X HOTAS. It, indeed, does not have the default F12 key mapped. Took me a while to figure it out also.

I didn't fancy VoiceAttack myself until I put on the HMD and was blind. Don't get me wrong, I can type 60+ words a minute without looking at the keyboard, but playing a game is a whole different story.

I downloaded the Anubis setup for VoiceAttack and it's pretty much mapped nicely for ED and with a couple of tweaks (I mapped F12 so that when I say "Align", it lines up my HMD to my current viewing angle, I make sure to be looking straight forward) I no longer touch the keyboard.

Mapping the Galaxy Map to your HOTAS is awesome too. Trying to navigate with the mouse was a nightmare for me.

Enjoy!

Thanks one and all for your sterling advise. I can report that the HMD is now behaving itself, and back under the F12 key. My head is now firmly attached to my body :) If only it had half a brain in it I'd be good to go [wacky]

Much appreciated, and more dumb questions to follow :)

I read something about Anubis the other day, but I think the site's closed or something. So no downloads possible. I may have that wrong though. With that said, I've kind of got my heart set on the Hattie Hayridge , Cleo voice pack (Female Holly - Red Dwarf) from HCS when it lands. Big fan :)

Glad to hear you're getting along OK so far, this game is superb and getting better with each update in my opinion, so hopefully you'll be able to really enjoy it once you get past some of the learning curves for various activities.

Haha. Yes, my name does give it away somewhat. I've used it for so many years now, that I tend to forget it's connotations.

Re-checked the Anubis thing, and the site was indeed up and running. I must be going mad. Apologies. I've had a play with VoiceAttack this morning, and it looks like it will fit the bill perfectly. So might just have a go with Anubis until Holly (Cleo) turns up :)

Just a heads up, the Galaxy Map and the "Balance Power" keys are not mapped in Anubis. The commands there but they're missing the binds. A quick, 5 second fix.

I also mapped the Panels (Target, System and Coms) to Anubis and disabled the "look at them" pop-up in the game settings. I just like to look around my ship without them getting in the way. :p

I actually downloaded Anubis, but couldn't figure out what to do. I had difficulties trying to unzip it into the sounds folder. It wasn't until I went off and purchased HCS's Astra voice pack, that I realised that I had to do things as the administrator. Too late by then, as I'd splashed the cash. Struggling now though, as the Astra pack contains no HOTAS profile, only a keyboard and mouse one. And as I try to map the HOTAS, I'm getting confused with Astra's wants and needs. Am I best to start afresh with a HOTAS profile, and just add the Astra commands one at a time? I can import all of the chit-chat, and knowledge databases in one fell swoop as they just sit in the background and don't upset anything.

Hey
What voice attack does is simulate keyboard button presses based on a voice input. So in theory you don't need a function you already have mapped to your hotas also mapped to voice attack, because you have the function accessible in VR already via your HOTAS - where it comes in critically useful in VR is where you've run out of options to map things on your HOTAS and would otherwise have to use the keyboard which you can't see.

However that doesn't mean you can't have something mapped to your HOTAS and voice attack simultaneously and this is what most people do - ED allows you to set two inputs for most functions. So for example you can assign lights on to button "a" on your HOTAS and also the "l" key on your keyboard in the ED control options. You'll see the primary inputs in the left column and the secondary inputs in the right and you can set both to whatever you want.

Next you can then tell voice attack to press the "l" key when you say "lights on" and hey presto you have the option to either a) turn lights on with your HOTAS button a, b) say "lights on" (voice attack will simulate you pressing the "l" key) or c) physically press the "l" key on the keyboard

Does that make sense? I feel like it was a bit muddled!

Yes, thank you. It makes perfect sense, and certainly not muddled, lol. I think where my head is spinning, is that I installed ALL of Astra's commands, and now I'm just trying to make sense of it all. I'd just started to get used to my HOTAS layout, and the way the ship was configured, but now it's all gone. I quite enjoyed having the display panels open up as I looked left and right, but that's disappeared too. I'm just gonna have to knuckle down and put it all back in order.

Hehe, there's a learning curve alright! :)

Have fun getting your ship set up - its your ship, she should respond the way you need. Searching around for the right control or command when your rear is getting shot off isn't fun (and is expensive).

Fly safe, purveyor of smeg...
