I just took three ancient relics I rounded up from the million-year-old remains of an ancient space-faring race, flew to a extraordinarily atmospheric Thargoid ground installation, drove inside a system of cave-like passages therein, where I loaded those relics into what looks like a bizarre navigation or data storage machine. At that point, automated scavenger drones stopped their scraping of the walls and dropping slimy juice into liquid-filled sacs of muck on the floor - which pop when you drive on them - and attacked me, as the machine went haywire and shot blasts of damaging energy all around, forcing me to flee... but I could not open the escape route from the Thargoid tunnels unless one of the other commanders there picked up an unknown probe or artifact from their own ship and came to trigger the machinery that would open a door and let me out.
Yeah, so scripted.
You can sit there, watch everything on YouTube, and complain about "scripted". We'll be out in the galaxy doing crazy science.
