It's really dumb that a cop can shoot you, and then your NPC controlling your fighter can shoot them, and YOU get a bounty.

Flying with report crimes off doesn't change this. They still turn red, your NPC will still shoot them, and you will still get a bounty.

Attack my target only will not fix this. When the target dies, it will swap back to defensive automatically, and then will automatically shoot anything that has shot you recently. Which includes if the police shoot you by accident.
Always switch your NPC to attack your target when it kills its current one while you move on to a different target.
If you see security go red recall the SLF.

Other ways to mitigate this risk are only use the SLF in CNB or Haz RES areas, always having turrets on Target Only is good.

You can still run into problems there, as miners can have bodyguards, which can cause the same problem.

On the whole, it's just unnecessarily frustrating and shouldn't be happening.

I've had stuff like this happen before in the chaos of a brawl, and often I only find out about it when I get the notification that there's now a bounty on me. Usually what I do is just wake out ASAP to the nearest Interstellar Factor so I can clear the bounty without Notoriety, and get back to it.

Nah it's just bad programming.

The underlying issue is that the authority ship was considered hostile. Actually it wasn't hostile at all, it did not intentionally hit OP so the fighter should not have fired back. It should not have been considered hostile. It's as simple as that.

The game does have a concept of intention when NPCs attack the player. A pirate will attack you if you don't drop your cargo. Authorities will attack you if you have a bounty. NPCs should only turn red / hostile when they attack you intentionally. This would make more sense and solve the problem.

This happens to me all the time. Sometimes I don't think there was even a reason, maybe i bumped into them during the fight, idk. It has become such a part of the norm i joke about it all the time, I'm going back to jail, they have my picture up there as inmate of the month. I'm on a first name basis with the local IF's and the prison ships. I am paying fines almost every game session, and bounties probably ever other session. Have had all kinds of funny instances regarding the accidents that happen with the police. I was hitting an enemy with two large beams a few nights ago, had the perfect firing line, an officer streaked across my screen flipping end for end at full speed in a straight line right through the beams, yup he got very angry, lol. I also imagine that the certain officers that have a chip on their shoulder find any reason at all, even made up it seems at times, just to blert out criminal and open fire on me. I have also had many legit fines and bounties by making mistakes in the heat of battle. Trying to cancel target because of chaff and accidentally target a cop with an itchy trigger finger. Idk, at first it was annoying, now it's just part of the random fun moment. Side note- I love it when a cop scans me and seems disappointed when they don't find anything. Like there is some personality thing working in the background, and he's had a bad day and is looking for any reason at all to take it out on someone. I have gotten better at finding an IF and resolving it quickly, I can take five and get more ammo when im there. lol

Just had this happen. A trigger-happy cop shot me by accident, doing enough damage to make him turn red to me. Then, my NPC immediately shot back, gaining me a bounty, and ruining the instance I was running.

In what world is it fair that you can do literally nothing wrong and still get a bounty and need to waste ten minutes going to an interstellar factor?
I'd say that police brutality, abuse of power, corruption, and cover ups is pretty realistic.

The cop turning red to you with no reason at all and shooting you is the bug here and seriously needs fixing. It's one of those long forgotten bugs like megaship cargo and even ships getting stuck inside the geometry.

Cops do not get bounties for shooting you, or even for shooting other cops, so you may ocasionally see cops fighting among themselves.

I'm not sure about the SLF part getting changed, as it is really doing its job of defending you. The root problem is still how the cops may turn red and shoot you for no reason and since they remain clean it is still a crime to shoot back at them.

Had this happen multiple times today. It's very frustrating that cops ever show up as hostile on your scanner. When I just want to chill out and relax and do some bounty hunting but every single time I end up getting a bounty because I didn't check to make sure my scanner hasn't betrayed me, it gets pretty frustrating pretty fast.

I think I'll just go play some battlefront, instead...

Sure, it would be great if NPC pilots would have working personalities and were able to refuse commands they don't agree with. But as it stands, they don't, so they do everything they are told to do, getting paid for it, shrugging off responsibility on to you.

This is actually the right solution. Your NPC SLF pilot should have enough volition to recognize and refrain from shooting security. Of course, this will also give them the option to tell you "I don't shoot cops" even though you want them too.

It's my fault that the cop shot me and became hostile on my scanner?

There's little point in moaning that the situation is "unfair" because it is, fundamentally, simply a bug.
There's obviously some threshold where, after scoring hits on another ship, a cop does enough damage that they commit to continuing their attack.
This situation is demonstrably a bug because if it wasn't, all the other cops would also turn red and come after you as well.
Added to this, cops cannot (AFAIK) become Wanted so once one decides to start shooting at you, other cops aren't going to intervene so your only choice is to pack up and jump away.

I suspect almost everybody who's farmed criminal NPCs in RES's has had this happen to them at one point or another.
It's been an issue for at least 5 years, maybe probably longer.

The best solution is to try and improve your situational awareness.
Keep an eye on all the green blobs on your scanner and if it looks like something is going to intersect with your line-of-fire, take your finger off the trigger.
This used to happen to me at least once a week.
Now, with a bit more experience, combat with support from cop-ships can be like a glorious aerial ballet, with one ship after another firing on a target until it goes boom.

And, if you're wondering about some kind of head-canon explanation for it, just ask yourself what sort of attitude the security forces in the ED universe are likely to have?
This is a universe where people are executed for parking their spaceships poorly.
Arguing with them is probably going to be like trying to argue with an Imperial Stormtrooper.
