It's time for a steamcharts thread!

Damn you got to admit this is a close one. 7800+ to 7300+ in less than two week. I had to scroll for about ten page of broken server topics to find you back.

True. :D

When I started the thread average concurrent players had been at 7100. I hate to admit it, but it's entirely possible that players will drop below that number before the end of January, just like you said. Only 4 days left to find out. ;)

"Life only exists on Twitch"

But if the game is dead - what will we watch on Twitch .... SC?

Edit: Actually I do watch more SC than ED on Twitch, because I'm not willing to pay out for the game*, or the hardware to play it :)

* yes, I know that's contentious, but for the sake of brevity

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
There are some streamers (not necessarily thinking SC here) that are just so fun to watch, though. Some people can't understand the appeal of watching someone play a game, but it really is fun if you have the right person playing. :)

Back on topic: Doooooomed.

As of today, even 2005's Flight Simulator X (steam edition) has inched over NMS & X4.
ED continues to stay steady within the overall seasonal wind-down of the holiday season.

So, about those Steam charts... After the 'faux trumpeting and jubilee' here it looks like we're seeing reality set back in once again as the numbers have dropped off a cliff and are heading back to what one would expect for a four plus year old game...in maintenance mode.

Latest numbers as of Feb 17 2019 show average players down 21% since last month. Let's see where we are next month.

I wouldn't say it's dropped off a cliff - rather it's shown a steady decline since the peak at 3.3 and Xmas.
It's still above the figures for 3.2 - you have to go back to March 2018 before the numbers were higher than they were now. I'm guessing that was the 3.0 release.

Well, it IS a 4 year old game in maintenance mode, so...makes sense?

As expected the naysaying returns, and yet again with weak timing and arguments. Just turning over the peak is hardly a case of a collapse or a lapse into "maintenance mode". It wouldn't be cost-effective for Frontier to have a hundred staff on ED since 3.3 just to be maintenance; instead we already know they're working on the next milestones with no need to pre-hype or announce the new developments until they are ready. Meanwhile there are multiple ongoing gameplay interests in ED such as DW2,mining, and the influx of new players discovering the wonders of ED for the first times.

The average is still pretty good for a four year history far above anything considered "maintenance" or abandoned. [wacko]

Game is not doomed, it just turning into dump of bugs.

Steamcharts can be growing to sky, FDev can report the record income and announce 50 more developers added to ED team every quarter - all of this doesn't matter, when it's already third patch deployed which supposed to fix "System Scan Completed" loop, and that bug still exists https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-still-happening-multiple-times-after-3-3-0-4
Connection drops/CTDs frequencies increase with patches, BGS is a chaos and also doesn't get better with already 3 patches, 3000+ bugreports submitted in just 2 months, and less than 100 fixed - all of this is not doom of course, just a dry numbers, indicating that current ED dev team can't handle the load.

Note, i do NOT state that ED dev team appears to be less than N devs, or even that it's too small, or that most experienced members were moved from it - nope.
But i'm stating that current ED dev team can not handle the load. Why? I don't care, just switched to several other games for a while, and will not return to EDH/purchase any further expansions, until FDev will fix at least all significant bugs, including BGS.

Interestingly, back in Nov 2018, i would instantly pay up to $500 without any hesitation to pre-order any major ED dlc announced by FDev, without even checking what's exactly in it. Nowadays, i will not pay even $20 to purchase the already released new dlc until FDev will sort out this whole bugfest (can they?).

Which is exactly what I predicted, everyone with more than two brain cells knows that player numbers are higher at major releases and will drop shortly after. The magic lies in comparing that peak with previous major updates which gives us a clue about the game being dying or not. But you actually need 4 brain cells to pull that stunt.

Time for an update as the OP wanted us to know how important Steam Charts are in gauging the current health of the game: second month of declines, and about 30% below the levels last year at this time. Hmm. Guess that says, what, that the game continues to decline as any 4 year old game should? I think so.

As the OP themselves said "Now if these numbers were anything to go by..." How do those socks taste?

The playercount will always naturally decline in between updates (or otherwise notable events). That's how it always has been, and how it always will be, for pretty much every game. If you really want, you can try to glean how well-received certain updates were by examining the rate of drop off. Interesting to note that the drop off after 3.3 released was more gradual than after any previous update, indicating it was most successful at keeping players around.
