Its to empty and marketed wrong

Problem with most reviewer is the scoring system:
i love = 8-9
i hate= 2-3
meh! = 5-6

Usually dont take them seriously as i enjoyed a lot of games that had bad score and found pretty meh the lastest blockbuster with their lot of 8s and 9s......

Another problem with the emptyness is that common people says that they love to see a lot of other players but they wait for the others to begin communication. Previous beta 3 had a lot of players per instances (got one with 21 players in) but nobody wanted to comm with me. Is it the game fault? or the lack of commitment of some players?

The game's fault for giving people no need to communicate or play together. The only role other people play is as obstacles, annoyances, threats or targets. They are just more competent (usually) NPC's.

From the front page of the official website: "Elite: Dangerous offers endless choice in one massively multiplayer online experience. "

Stating that the game is "massively multi-player online" (it is*) does not state that it includes a cookie-cutter replica of all other MMO(RPG?) game mechanics that potential buyers may have experience of in other games.

*: "massively" - all players affect the same game world and have the possibility of encountering each other in open-online; "multi-player" - yes, it is; "online" - that too.

World of tanks is advertised as an mmo, you however only see 29 other people at any given time.

Sure this game may seem empty right now but I see 2 reasons for that. First there are a lot of people that will be playing that can't until the full release, so not everyone is in yet. Secondly threre are a lot of places to go when you start, and no direction. Some people will go to Sol but some people can't get in yet and won't bother going there. People are going to be spread out for a while until we have events bringing us together or a region of space designated as galactic center, a place where a player goes if he wants to see people. That used to be the starter systems but since gamma the starting systems are many LY apart from each other.

We basically need someone to say: "This is the main hub of the galaxy, this is where you go if you want civilisation and a multiplayer experience." When that happens and everyone knows where to head when they start, it will feel more like an mmo.

To the OP - I a way you are right, it is a space sim sandbox with multiplayer availability. I do agree with that. However by definition it is classified as a MMO, in fact it is probably more turely a MASSIVE multiplayer than any other, so I guess it is normal practice to market it this way. I would say maybe a better description as you have done along with that MMO tag would be the way forward.

Ref the empty space, give it time, in gamma it has already got a load more busy.

be patient!!

Of course it is multipplayer! I would even say it IS an mmo but maybe not in the usual sense so I could see that being debated..... But not multiplayer? Come on!.

Fifa has 1 other player in and that is mp. I have seen way more people in elite. If i choose i can interact with said people. The grouping needs some work tho.

Calling people fanboys who disagree with you and trying to ram your opinions down people's throats as fact reflects poorly on you IMO.

After 30 years of multiplayer gaming I am quite capable of knowing if a game is mp or not!

In FIFA you can compete against or play with that other player for a meaningful outcome RELATED to playing together.

Let me know when you find a group mission, the ability to jump together, awards or differentiation for dogfighting an actual player vs. NPC.... yeah.

This is such a fundamental factor of MP I can't believe we are even debating this. This game is not multiplayer. It's online single player where we all share the same turf but it means nothing.

Yes. Its the games fault. Communications are cumbersome and difficult. I have yet to actually communicate with another player outside of teamspeak.

A multiplayer game is by defintion a game with multiple players in it. I think you're looking for a "multiplayer social game". You can be with more people in Elite at the same time, than can readily fit in a living room, unless you got a mansion or something. So it is not exactly isolation incarnate. But can you manage to attract them, that is the question. ;)

To be clear there was only 1 right answer to this:

A Social Environment is:

a) One where there are bunch of people doing their own, individual tasks and not interacting with others who happen to be in the same room

or

b) One where that bunch of people is completing their tasks as a result of their interactions with the other people in the room

And it isn't A.

Being online in a game where multiple players have no incentive (I mean literally, don't give me that "use your imagination" crap defense again) to play together is an online, single-player game.

Find a SINGLE multiplayer game where there isn't a REASON to do something together, whether it be work or fight.

It doesn't exist. Because that completely defeats the purpose of being online together.

From Wikipedia:

A multiplayer video game is a video game in which more than one person can play in the same game environment at the same time. Video games are often single-player activities, pitting the player against preprogrammed challenges or AI-controlled opponents (which lack the flexibility of human thought). Multiplayer games allow players interaction with other individuals in partnership, competition or rivalry, providing them with social communication absent from single-player games. In multiplayer games, players may compete against two (or more) human contestants, work cooperatively with a human partner to achieve a common goal, supervise other players' activity or engage in a combination of activities. Examples of multiplayer games include deathmatch and team deathmatch, MMORPG versions of PVP and Team PvE games, capture the flag, domination (competition for resources), co-op and objective-based modes assaulting (or defending) a control point. Multiplayer games typically require players to share the resources of a single game system or use networking technology to play together over a greater distance.

It would be an MMO if it had the essential social tools for proper MMO collaborative play. People in different instances and groups could then socialize and work together towards bigger goals.

Never, in any game has MMO meant tools... It just means lots of people online playing at the same time as you... That's it. There is nothing says the MMO requires tools included (would be nice, mind you).
Anything more than lots of players playing with you in the game is just wishful thinking on your own private definition.
Having said that, I DO agree the tools are at a loss, knowing the WHY doesn't help much however.
I'm still puzzling how that can be applied and keep the theme of the game.

Back to my marketing challenge... this needs some creative thought....Let me explain the limitations and you (all of you) come up with a way to stay within the limits provided:
1) Communication is pretty much limited to traceable ships near, but they offer voice comm tween friends already
2) Ships are fuel based and range based on the ship... how do you account for quickly matching up with someone dozens of systems away and the fuel
3) What exactly are the tools you want to add that can be applied within the reality plan of the game.

Actually in many cases people cannot play with their friends.

1. Cannot do missions with friends
2. Cannot share loot with friends
3. Cannot interdict with friends
4. Cannot hyperjump with friends
5. Cannot use a chat room with friends, because there are none
6. Cannot send mail messages to friends, because there is no in-game mail system.
7. Cannot use system chat, because there is none
8. Cannot send credits to friends.
9. Cannot form Wings with friends in open play.

We do know that many of those are on the way already, in case you missed that.

IMO Its marketed wrong because what we currently have is the base for them to build from.

In hindsight I strongly, STRONGLY disagree that the planetary content and EVA content should be paid DLC expansions
(and yes I get them free as a Kickstarter 'Founder', so no personal bitterness here)

I'm playing the Gamma and thinking it all seems amazing for its current state but imagine how it will be when the planets and 1st person content is in there as well!! .....then much more content, interaction and variety will automatically happen as a function of the new mechanics.

The problem with that is for many people, my opinion means they've payed full price for an unfinished vision and will be expected to pay at least twice more to get the full amount of content.

Hmmm, to me it seems that some people don't understand the simple term of MMO. Elite is an MMO. There are lots of people playing the game in the same galaxy at the same time. Just because certain tropes from things like World of Warcraft or Everquest haven't appeared for you to play right now is not Frontiers' problem. If you'd bothered to read the newsletters as they appeared you'd know that Capitol Ships are imminent which should lead to multiplayer campaigns with wars breaking out here and there (as seen in the early trailers). Trading goods with each other is imminent too, so you can share goods and monies (sort of) with each other. You can already do things like Mine ore and your friend could then scoop it for profit (if you work together), you could (once the feature is here) trade the refined ore between your group.... A couple of guys Mining, couple refining, another couple standing guard its all that kind of stuff you can do.
Lets not forget that when Planet landing arrives they'll be shuttles and ships trading with the surface too. So instead of traffic only heading to the station it'll be head out to the planet and back too. This has all been done before in the likes of Frontier so you can reasonably assume it will appear in ED.

But you know what this is ELITE!!! not X-Rebirth or EVE online or Mass Effect or even Star Citizen (if it ever gets released). If thats the kind of game you want you'd be better off buying into one of those games instead. Elite is about freedom to explore and create your own adventure, not some high density, hand crafted questing game. Its bigger than that. You have to be patient instead of this constant want, want , want attitude everyone is obsessed with. The core game is what is being delivered first and then the expansions will follow. This game is massive! right. Frontier isn't an EA style global developer with thousands of employees, its a medium sized developer trying create a vast gaming world and it takes time. I have faith in them. Braben is passionate about it and I think in time (and lets get this right) a lot sooner than Star Citizen will deliver a game, we'll have most if not all of the features that have been announced. Done in the right way to quality.

I say again 'patience'. Elite is a game to savor for months nay years to come, not some 20-50hr campaign and then done. Its meant to be lived. To evolve and expand over time.

Anyway that's my 2p on the subject. :) Fly safe pilots.

PS. Thank your lucky stars it's NOT like the other MMO's otherwise we'd be paying monthly fees too!!!!! ;)

PPS. SAB380 I see your point sort of. But Frontier aren't selling the game as 'unfinished' imo. It does everything and much much more than the original ELITE. It's a complete game in that respect. The Planet and EVA expansions are expensive and time consuming undertakings and to be fair they have to be able to re-coup some of that capital back. I don't think its unreasonable to have it as paid DLC. I was a Kickstarter and paid over £100 for the privilege so I think its only right I get it for free. You don't know how much these expansions with cost, they may be only £15 or £25 etc. who knows its still a hell of a lot less than what I've paid, so I think its a bargain for non-beta customers given the sheer amount of man hours that will be poured into them. Also you don't see WOW expansions been given away for free (not without some underlying Pay2win scheme in place). hee hee ;)

Actually it's not that bad. I randomly commed up some other commander and they were like
"...hello?"
"Hi!"
"...uhhh..."
"lol just testing comms, pretty clear huh?"
"yeah works pretty slick"
"alright see ya"

It wasn't particularly difficult and sounded cool.
