Definitely not a secret, just not mentioned because you can figure it out yourself fairly quickly. I noticed it back in GPP.

i guess he means that if you maintain eta=7secs on station approach you will never overshoot.

I didn't even know about it until after GPP, and I bought ED the day it was released on Xbox.
The real secret is that it is a 6 second rule, don't tell anyone.

You learn all your life, it's just a some point the stuff you think you are learning is really just stuff you have forgotten.
dunno about overshooting, but planet braking definitely is (although it got a big nerf ... doesn't it work anymore? maybe i should finally fire up the game again one of these days
).
Now I thought it was 5, don't get me wrong, 7 seconds is safe, 6 is a little riskier, but 5 is the limit, if you hit 4 you've overshot
You can use the gravity of the planet to slow you down but in my experience it only works with gas giants or planets with higher gravity, it doesn't work with smaller moons, circling back is only useful if you're worried about interdictions imo
I've always heard it as the 7-second rule, though I do it at 9 or 10 seconds to be safe. I have a quick button combo for 75% thrust which is what you should be around when you're 7 seconds out from the planet. You'll never overshoot it then...unless your cat happens to jump on you and you lose full control and the controller loses connectivity and you're racing towards the planet at full speed and you're cursing your cat and...well you get the picture...
This is something I LOVE about ED - that we can spend so long with and still have so much to learn.

Not just you dude! Started in GPP, started on PC late 2015... Only found this myself a couple months ago! XD
Never done those either, must've something to do with us being old farts maybe ?
