I've finally put my finger on what ED is missing.

Humor.

We've all said it was a little boring, a little dry. I mean It can be absolutely frightening at times and infuriating. But you don't see too much on the positive side of things. You don't see too much lightheartedness or any charisma or character to the game. The only funny thing I think anyone can admit that is funny is the "penalty of death" for loitering. Galnet is pretty monotone all interactions with avatars are all business.

It is a serious game.

People are not serious. People / humans are creative and funny people. Look at the internet chock full of memes as the drop of a hat when anything happens in the world.

Memes are banned in the EU but are they banned in the galaxy too? Do thargoids meme??

What FD needs is an injection of fun into the game. Fun meaning funny, ridiculous, tongue in cheek behavior. All sorts of styles of humors both dark and light. Add the occasional crazy mission text. Add some crazy information about planets in the system map. Name some seriously funny planets.

DO SOMETHING to inject MORE MORE MORE humor and fun into the game. Hire a comedian if you have to. Make space memes spraypainted in stations.

I'm not talking about easter eggs. I'm talking about seeding the galaxy with some positivity and humor.

Ok guys - lets share our humorour moments. I'm not talking highbrow humor. I'm talking about borderline inappropriate, dark, light funny. Even dad joke material. WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN in the game that has made you laugh out loud??

I don't know that I've ever laughed in game ...[haha] This forum on the other hand...

Sounds like you play solo. Try a PG / open - lots of fun stuff happens ;)

Edit: Turn up for the racing on the livestream tonight, should be fun if you don't watch the YT comments :D

Some of us are anti social and hate people. Or don't know anyone and generally have bad interactions with people online.

Forcing us to interact for our own entertainment purposes is not good. There needs to be some in game humor. Who care if anyone gets "offended". They could parody all sorts of things in the galaxy that is not political in nature but would be funny.

Thargoid jokes anyone?

I'm not here for fun. I'm here to make credits, and that's it.

Fun is for Onionhead-smoking hipsters.

Bah.

In Frontier and FFE, there was quite a bit of humour, mostly in the in game newsletters which all had different styles. ED in comparison is.. beige.

I never played those so I’ll take yer word fer it...by and large though I agree.

The chat filter that blocks otherwise totally non swear words though...that’s pretty funny too but not in a ha ha way ^

There's plenty of tongue in cheek humour spattered around the game if you look closely.

Some of the tourist beacons and scannable data points give some amusing bits of flavour text. Particularly thinking of the Squirrel's Nest bar in Pleione and the Church of Kum Bayar tourist beacon, but there are others.

The game could use a lot more of it, for sure, but the fact that it's not completely devoid of humour makes it a bit strange that sometimes FD shy away from adding more light hearted and irreverent content to the game under the guise of internal consistency (the T9 space cow paint job springs to mind here).

No thanks, the NPC names are stupid and immmuuuuurshun destroying enough without bad comedy being added for the heck of it.

Well, the old mission system (and by old I mean pre-2.1) contained quite a lot of objectives that showed a little life in the Galaxy, I can remember the smuggling missions where you had to slip through authorities to deliver biowaste because the contraband was hidden in the manure. And then that was replaced by "Deliver [20] tonnes of [Gold]. Delivery is good for our economy."

I agree, is what I'm saying.

Thats my point. Its rare and far between.

The fact they added bobblehead so fast was funny. Dash items etc that is nice. But you have to admit the entire galaxy seems very very serious. It doesn't sound "fun". Meanwhile people have arranged their own races and other things.

Maybe when we get space legs / space stations maybe actual 3d avatars and dialogue interactions there could be some funny things?

I'm mainly talking missions, interactions with NPC's.

The Wedding barge was somewhat funny but it was only one of the funny things out there.

There's quite a bit of that still scattered around the tourist beacons, local Galnet, even the occasional commodity description or similar. If you like the dystopian style.

Galnet too, occasionally ... the Olav Redcourt / Andromedaries articles were very well done in that respect ... the recent Duval/Rochester story was very much in the traditions of RIG. I do think it's over-aggregated, though, so you don't get the editorial voices coming through anywhere near as clearly - but they're probably not at the stage yet of being able to put out five articles a week (six, I guess, now that the Alliance has its own paper) consistently enough to split them out. Some day, perhaps?

That is all highbrow humor.

When it is creative and if people are just glossing over text and don't read into things they'll MISS THE JOKES.

Their style of dry british humor is good but there already is enough of that. They need to bring in some funny people from a different culture with just raw comedy that anyone gets. Inject it into the universe. Inject FUNNY missions into the galaxy.

Making things off kilter and or funny / crazy sparks controversy and discussion and fun. It is where memes are born.

If you were to write a mission dialogue for one mission you wanted to be humorous - what would it be?

Difficulty level - No biowaste involved:

They were released in a pre-internet / social media age. Sadly 'these days' (showing my age), there is an army of people out there waiting to take offence at anything and everything, so things tend to get watered down to the lowest common denominator.

I was hoping that with all this global warming, the snowflakes would melt, but sadly not :)

Yours,
Grumpy old git
