Having been away for a bit it appears that mining has now become multi-mineral-discipline and not just LTDs. You earn your crust from multiple minerals. Not just one. Well done Frontier Developments if that was! the plan! It's more of a game.

edit: I earned my billions from LTDs! Better not to earn so much. Play the game. Enjoy the process!

Yeah agreed, it seems that the minerals are now much more balanced and it pays off to mine more than just "the one thing that's currently in".
One can now bring a full suite of equipment into the ring and every bit is actually useful, including the subsurface missiles.
It makes for much more entertaining session to use all the stuff instead of just doing one thing. :)
