Jameson Memorial - what is the attraction?

Greeting fellow Commanders, I have a question that I hope doesn't offend!

I read quite often about Commanders setting up their home station at Jameson Memorial (yep the one in that permit locked system that is hard to pronounce or type in a hurry). I will be honest, when I made my first Elite rank and got the permit, I naturally dropped everything and headed straight over there - and was seriously disappointed. It would have to one of the most mundane, boring stations going around - and ugly as hell! Now I am trying to work out what the attraction is, why do so many set up home there.

Is it because it sells everything? For me that isn't a factor, I am not continuously buying ships and modules, and when I do I take my taxi there or the ship that needs the modules.

Is it because of the discount? Lets be honest here, if you have reached Elite rank, credits shouldn't really be worry. No matter how much extra you pay somewhere else, that cost can be offset by one mining trip can't it. If I need something I weigh up the cost saving against the time it takes me to get there, most of the time it is just easier to buy whatever I am after locally.

Is it because it is the traditional home of the Pilot's Federation? Yes it is but lets face it, the good old Pilot's Federation has let the place deteriorate badly. The station itself looks like it has been used as a biowaste container, and it isn't the most law abiding and safe area is it. You would think that being the home of the PD, it wouldn't tolerate anything untoward or illegal!

Is it because 'it's a cool place to be'? If yes, then your definition of cool is different to mine. Having to run the gauntlet of gankers and griefs every time you leave the station would get tired very fast to me. And going solo or PG, well why bother being there then.

Is it because it is a 'target rich environment'? This I could understand if you are into that sort of thing, but because I don't PvP, it is actually a damn good reason to avoid the system entirely lol

Just to smooth any ruffled feathers or knickers that suddenly developed a twist, I have nothing against anyone who wants to hang their shingle at Jameson. I just feel that there are far superior stations out there, it is a big galaxy but so many stick to one minor little system.

Is this the new "can we have a unique station type for Jameson?" Thread? It's been a while ;)

Nope, although I personally think FD could have done more to make the station a little more unique, even if it is just to bring it into line with the Lore surrounding Commander Jameson.

I am just trying to work out why so many call it home, maybe I am missing something or not part of the kewl gang? o_O

Not sure how many have a home system, or use SD - I do neither do someone else needs to answer that. The size of the outcry from people finding they couldn't base their carrier there would have been an indicator :D

Is it because it sells everything?

Is it because of the discount?

Those two were probably the reasons why people even considered this station as home base. After some time it went full self propelling wheel. Everything available made people flock there. People flocking there made it popular. It is popular because people are flocking there. Rinse, repeat.

So in the end, it was convenience.

I don't give a frag about JM. Discounts? What for? We have much more credits, than we ever can throw around. Hell I could afford a whole Orbis for myself alone.
So therefore, yes, I'm as dissapointed about this pile of spacetrash like you OP.

My "homebase" is my ship. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well you're guaranteed a lot of Independent Pilots to .. cough .. "interact" with? So I can understand why people set up home there. Not my cup of tea to call it home base either but on the odd occasion I do drop through, it does make the heart beat a little faster.

Mate, you are braver than me lol. DZ (yep the whole system) is one place I will never visit in open. For starters if I am going there I am in a ship that needs something, hence why I am going there. So that equates that the ship isn't at it's fighting best so why would I even contemplate engaging in PvP lol

Very few of my ships are combat equipped either though, so it's more like running a gauntlet? No way am I going to actually engage anyone who interdicts me so it becomes an evasion game, one that doesn't involve a high wake either because that kind of defeats the exercise. So it's a close monitoring of the scanner, possible strategic cold drops, potential fighting of interdiction with high wake as a last resort. Each to their own of course but I think there can be a genuine feeling of accomplishment from having risked it and survived doing this stuff in open .. because it is risky? (That's the Klingon way!?) lol

The only thing good about JM I see, is convenience. Having everything for sale in one place, making reporpusing ships, trying new loadouts, or getting a brand new fully A-Rated ship a breeze.

That being said, my favorite home base spots are nowhere near JM. But I do lug around over 100 stored modules, which I wouldn't have to do if I simply stayed at JM (or if we had some kind of fleet carrier).

As for the station being more "unique", that's true, but neither are Sol, Achenar, Alioth, or any of the powerplay capitals. And that's s shame. The only unique locations in the game are the engineer bases, and that's from long ago when FD was still trying, as the new engineers no longer have unique bases, just a default planetary port.

Those two points make it a convenient home system. I've done my share of ship and module hunting in the past and back then there were hardly any external sources to help with that, so once I gained access I moved my fleet there and never looked back.

I need interstellar far more often than buying modules, so my bubble home is in a station with the service. With the jump ranges today, Jameson is always just a jump or
two away.
