Jameson Memorial - what is the attraction?

Jameson's discount warehouse "We sell everything, and I do mean everything - special discount for elite pilots"

That is the only reason I go there, to buy and outfit a ship in one go at a 10% discount - yes credits are no issue for many cmdrs but if you are buying a cutter for instance and fitting it to the value of 1+bn that does save you quite a lot of credits. Even without that just getting every module you need (except the special thrusters) in one place is great and saves the hassle of flying around trying to find the module you want, on top of that its only a few jumps away.

Saying that I haven't been there in months as I haven't bought a ship in all that time and I really wouldn't want to base myself there...

yes...unfinished ships wait an Jameson. Colonia should have the same equipment either. Probably with a +10% malus, but who cares.

But...I guess it still is something to think about, if you are going to Colonia...will this be your home, or will you stay at the bubble? Colonia as your home simply is "harder". There are more things you simply do not get, or get all the time. And I like that. It´s not to everyone.

Colonia is for lovers....even sick, crazy, criminal, ...lovers. ;-)
The problem I have with Colonia is two-fold. One, I encounter performance issues (this starts about 8k ly's or so towards the core from the bubble for me) i.e. stuttering especially during jumps, and two (which is more important) the complete lack of a meaty bit of game content (Thargoids, Guardians, most CG's, PP (not that I care, but still), ability to purchase a Vette/Cutter, A-rated modules).

It's a very pretty place and the community is lovely, but I always end up going back to the bubble as there's just more happening there - and if I want to 'get away from it all' I can just move to the Pleiades for a while.

If it's cost and having modules available I find bouncing between 2-3 Li Yong Rui systems does the job if I'm in the mood for discount buys. For example, Arjung is a good place to buy a Cutter and has a few class 8a modules. The rest are only a jump or two away. Or just mine another void opal core.

Personally I think going to Jameson is solely for when you want some 'interaction' with other players.

The main attraction of Jameson, for me, is convenience.

I'm not "building ships all the time" but when I do build a ship, I don't need the faff of having to visit half a dozen systems to gather up all the modules I want to fit.

I don't base myself in SD but I always head over there to shop for a new ship.

ShinDez? Jameson Memorial?

In the glossy Ads and in-game descriptions, that's basically what it should be :

In the fine, everyday Reality of ELITE though?

(yep , it's basically a persistent mudhole - that's the only thing that makes it special)

Nah, see that's the problem, Jameson isn't even a unique persistent mudhole, it is just one of 100's of mudholes around the galaxy.

Still think FD really screwed up with this one, they could have made it something different but gave it their normal half attempt.

Hehe, well at least it's the highest-grade locked "Permit Mudhole" for what it's worth ;)
(plus, taking what little is left of the lost lore - it technically represents a "Retirement mudhole", so that's kinda unique xD )

All others seem kinda transient and other candidates (for persistence) like Deciat aren't even permit locked.

Correction: It is not a 10% discount, but a 12.5%, when arriving at Elite in any of the 4 branches you are granted a 2.5% discount at all planetary port/stations, I do not actually buy the ships In Jameson Memorial, if I did not go to LHS 20/Ohm City which is a Li Yong-Rui system and a 17.5% discount is applied, and they have almost all the equipment, what was missing I was going to a system to about 4-5Ly of LHS 20, almost nothing ...

And I add, Jameson Memorial is not the only one that sells everything, CD-43 11917/Attilius Orbital is the other one that sells everything, but of course it is to make prestige in CQC ...

Jameson's Memorial doesnt sound like something the Pilot federation would call the station but more something else. If they close that name specifically I would say it sounds rather dubious like they had something to do with how his life ended?

SD and JM were once my home-base. It was less crowded way back then.
I visit occasionally when I'm building or improving a ship, simply because I can get 99.9% of the modules needed.
I have passed through recently, and it's always exciting to see whether the seal-clubber wings are out or not, and nice to chit chat with those in system.
But I'd not make it my home.
In fact I don't really have a home, more of a home region (Empire space - basking!), so like others have mentioned, my ship is my home, and, like the seasonal workers of the old world in Sol, I wander the space lanes, only staying in one place so long as there is ripe fruit for picking, and good wages to be paid.

FYI

The original elite had you playing as Commander Jameson. ED is set in the future, and so the station is a memorial in honour of him.

My take (and most of the DDF from the day) expected something a bit more grandiose .. it's supposedly the 'go to' place for the Pilots Federation (aka players) but no - just a run of the mill station .. What a major letdown.

(and don't get me started on the system name ...)

I used to call it home. All the ships, all the modules, it just made sense.

But I moved everything I own to a system with REZ's as that's where I spend most of my time at the moment.

Having restart recently, and thus nowhere near Elite rank, I'm in no hurry. I found a system that has the vast majority of modules I need, and I already did most of the experimenting I wanted to do back on my PS4 account. So even though I'm a new player on PC, I know exactly what ships and weapons I prefer, and once I have them, I tend to stick with them. So I don't need a one-stop-shop like Jameson.

As for meaningful player encounters, I still have Deciat :p

Speaking of, Jameson isn't the magic "do everything at one place" station people say it is. You still need to travel all over the Bubble to engineer and apply new special effects. Now if Jameson was also a one-stop-shop for engineering and all material trades, I might be in more of a hurry to get there!

My home base is MacKenzie Relay in Cemiess. As soon as I can land on Emerald, I’ll be shifting it to Fort O’Brian... assuming that the Dev Team at that time cares anything at all about the lore of this Franchise, an assumption that seems increasingly unlikely after Michael Brooke’s left the team.

Jameson Memorial has one thing going for it: convenience. I use it to buy and equip a new ship for my main, and that’s it. Because it’s so active, commodity trading is pointless, the mission boards are almost empty, and most “emergent content providers” there don’t know what to do when their target doesn’t follow their script.

This is all academic, if course. It’ll be another year before my main returns to the Bubble. But my overall impression of the place won’t change.

It also use to be the place to get the uber mysterious Darkwheel mission that were supposedly related to finding Raxxla.
But they not appeard for ages now
