At the risk of taking an interest in an otherwise uninteresting story:

Did Corbyn not walk past any empty seats, then?

No, look at the OP video. The video on the 'News' channels at the time was edited to only show the parts when people had their heads ducked behind the seats (revealed in the OP video). The other part was JC walking past reserved seats (revealed in the OP video). Virgin have taken this long to 'find' the video footage.

Good old media witch hunt again. Guess we're all numb to it now; fake news and terrorism, just another day...

Who knows? He might have done, or there may have been some free seats next to people he didn't want to sit next to.

If I could make news headlines everytime I've failed to get a seat on a train my life would be epic! I could be in the news everyday and I could make money sponsering things :)

Like deodorant.

Honestly.

If you know you're going to get on a crowded train, please use deoderant. I recommend Sure for men - You know you're fresh and pure with Sure!

Maybe watch the video?

I did - He was offered an upgrade to first class and he refused.

I've been in that same situation and been offered an upgrade - I accepted it (and first class is comfy).

I like JC but if he wants to play the martyr then fine, but he could have had a comfy seat if he wanted it.

Fair enough. But can you imagine the media vultures swooping if he accepted a first class ticket? Headlines such as, 'Hypocrite', 'Sell Out', 'Lefty Luggage', 'EXCLUSIVE: Corbyn Filmed In First Class Carriage Whilst Hundreds Sit On Floor' ?

That's why I would never want to be a politician :D

The best thing he could have done would have been to accept the first class ticket and then give it to one of the 'hundreds' of others who were sitting on the floor.

Imagine the headlines then!

Good point. Maybe next time, eh?

Room was made for JC by offering upgrades to other people, so that already happened.

The point is not how upsetting a filled train is, but that a person is attacked by the media by lying about an uninteresting story. The fact you can take random bits of one's life, lie publicly about it just to falsely shame someone is bizarre.

The country is going to wrack and ruin. The other day over a hundred people were told to leave the country immediately or they'd face detention.

The Tories are worried about a clock and Labour are waffling about a train journey.

It's making Trump look positively enlightened.

Bizarre? It's downright disgusting. I don't think I'm alone in thinking that I no longer trust anyone in the media. I never trusted the Red Tops, but the broadsheets I had a smidgen of 'faith' in. I mostly get my info from online sources, but the only way to be sure of their authenticity is to cross examine it with material from other sources. Because companies like the BBC appear to cherry pick their news, I don't even hear about quite major incidents because of their so called political sensitivity. The problem is, when you scratch the surface you end up going to sites whose views are extreme. I don't know if this is behind the recent violent protests we've been seeing, particularly in the U.S.

And realistically, what will this startling revelation amount to? A few people, like ourselves, rightfully calling it out as disgusting while the liars get less than a slap on the wrist - and tomorrow, we'll be awaiting the next bout of ad hominem in the commons.

JC shouldn't play PR games, then. This story was created and promoted by his team, who he was paying. It was solely about casting JC as some sort of man of the people and got to a point where even the Guardian realised that the original news item was misleading and required some explanation.

In case you'd forgotten - this is the man that promised a fresh approach to his politics and presentation. No spin, all substance. Except for the spin.

JC was sat down in a seat 45 minutes into a 3 hour journey. JC admitted himself that he could have been sat down earlier but chose not to as he'd prefer to sit with his wife (strangely, she wasn't present for that photo with him sat on the floor). JC refused an upgrade to first class, presumably so he could demonstrate how hard done by he and his fellow commuters were. The self-admitted facts of the matter stink to high-heaven.

The news piece was basically hand-crafted by Yannis Mendez and a guy called Anthony Casey. Frankly, that's where the blame for the backlash lies. The stupid thing is, if he hadn't resorted to picking a fight with Branson (a Labour supporter and donor, by the way - top work JC) he would have made a perfectly reasonable political point which would have chimed with lots of people and then we'd have moved on.

The New Statesman I think covers this nonsense pretty well:

No one comes out of Traingate looking particularly good. Corbyn's team were initially disorganised in their messaging. The Guardian acknowledges that it made errors in its reporting. And as the Double Down video highlights, much of the wider media should have been more sceptical, rather than following an anti-Corbyn narrative. The saga also didn't look great for Virgin – not just because of a crowded train, but also because Branson's intervention looked like a billionaire meddling in politics.

But for Double Down to present its footage as proof of a conspiracy to smear Corbyn is a little awkward, when it has heavily spun its own story. When calling for less cosiness in the media, it would also help to mention that one of its directors was a key player in the whole affair.

(And how on earth do you manage to make this about the Conservatives?)

The Economist, Business Insider, and the FT are superb.

The Guardian is pretty good, as is Der Spiegel (which contains many articles in English now).

As you say, stay away from everything else UK based. This is a good primer.
