Joining the Oculus club...

I've had my DK2 for a a week and a half now. It is easier to describe the feeling by explaining how my house mate reacted.

I was just sitting in space, and he was standing behind me. I gave him the Rift, and he put it on. He was doing the typical "wow!" thing, and went to put his hands on the back of my chair. My pilot chair. Naturally this didn't work. When he took the headset off he said "Crap! This room is smaller than the one I was just in!"

Needless to say, it wasn't that long until he ordered his own. Based on the email delivery tracking, he'll have his on Tuesday. He hasn't told his girlfriend yet, but I think he'll get away with it; I stuck her in the docking tutorial and she went all "wow" and asked him when he's getting one.

I hate you rich people -.- ... I seriously do.

Sell family members into slavery. It'll be worth it ;)

Placed my order for my Oculus this morning.
Very happy myself... but she's not... :(
I neglected to inform her of the shipping and tax. I'm on spud and washing up duty for the foreseeable future...

It'll be worth it. :)

Just wear your rift while doing chores ;)

Is the Gear VR worth it? I've got the DK2, but also have a TrackIR, so if the Gear is any good, I'd go Gear+TrackIR.

Id recommend against that idea. Track IR still has delay when moving your head.. ive used trackIR for a few years now, and while it doesnt give you any sort of motion sickness, the VR set works very differently since the image doesnt really move, it stays put, but your head does.. that delay, even 1/2 second the TrackIR has, would make you sick in a hurry i would think..

One thing Oculus did right, was get the motion tracking down pat.. its practicaly instantanious.. just make sure your machine can run whatever your using in OR at 75FPS and its good to go and butter smooth

I'm not so sure about the motion sickness, TrackIR 5 samples at 120Hz, so it might be okay. That said, GearVR and TrackIR together probably won't work too well.

The issues I see are:
  • The TrackIR range in Elite is quite limited, about 90 degrees rotation and about 10cm translation in any direction except your ship facing, which I think goes to about 50cm.
  • You would need to use 1:1 mapping on all axes.
  • You may find the the Track Clip Pro is eclipsed by your GearVR when facing left, and by its own housing when facing right.

TrackIR gives you your full monitor resolution (4k for me), but with limited movement. The DK2 gives you great movement, but with a noticable resolution drop, and in my case, after some time my eyes adjust so that they pick out individual pixels rather than the larger image even with "Rift friendly" colour schemes and my eyes start to feel like when I wake up after not getting anywhere near enough sleep.

Trying to hold out for CV1 - I even have the money set aside and ready.

So tempted to just order a DK2, though. This is turning out to be a major test of my willpower! :p

Wait for it, it will be worth it.. if you said you have TWICE the money put aside, i would say you should have ordered DK2 yesterday already! :)

Its an amazing experiance.. I wasnt sold on the whole thing before the dk2.. thought it would end up like Nvidia 3d.. but now that i own one, I will not even blink at buying the CV1 version and upgrading when its out. Its GOING to happen.. i WILL own one.. thats all there is to it ;)

You and I are in the exact same boat. I want one so bad, but I promised myself I'd wait for CV.

The DK2 is about a LOT more than just your arc of movement. IF that were the case, you could just strap a couple of highrez monitors to a head strap on all sides of you. The OR puts you IN the ship. You can't compare them directly like that. That's not how it works.
