Journey to Sagittarius A*

OK so I have an idea to travel the 25,000LY or so to Sagittarius A. That's the Supermassive Black hole at the centre of the galaxy.
.
I am currently outfitting my Asp for the journey and was wondering if anyone wanted to come along?
.
The idea is to travel as wing(s) and do +2000LY per day. I will be playing between 8pm and 10pm BST. If we can get another wing from a different time zone that would be good as well.
.
You will need a jump range in excess of 25LY and the fuel to do at least 6 jumps at that range. We will be fuel scooping every 5 jumps (baring brown dwarfs).
.
Stuff you will need:
.
Auto field maintenance unit
'A' class FSD
Hull reinforcement
Advanced Discover Scanner
Detailed surface scanner
A decent weapon loadout
Fuel scoop
.
Stuff you don't need
.
FSD interdictor
Kill warrant scanner
Shield cells
cargo
.
.

We will be dropping out of FSD every day to park up in normal space and get back to it as close to 8pm as possible.
There wont be much surface scanning - as I want to be there and back inside a month, but if we do come across an undiscovered earth like planet we will do the deed.
.
Hopefully we can post up a blog here if things go well. I suspect there will be a decent amount of credits in it for all successful participants as well as a rank rise or 2.
.
.

If we can get a whole wing to the black hole that would be great! And if we do meet any nefarious characters we will have safety in numbers.
.
Departure will be Saturday 30th May.
.
.

Post up if you are interested.

Decent Weapon loadout? :S

Can I assume that exploration is NOT the sole purpose of your journey? ;)

Anything to do with that other post about somebody camping at Sag.A and sniping at unaware explorers?

Anyway, good luck!

400Ly out and the odds of running into anyone is very slim. Dropping the weapons for reduced weight and longer jump range is what most do. If by strange chance you get interdicted, instantly submit then jump.

It's faster to scoop as you go, most of the time you can scoop almost back to full as you get your ship pointed at your next jump target and wait for the FSD to ready up. Turning off anything you don't need such as shields, sensors, power distribution cargo hatch etc will bring your ship heat down low enough that you can scoop and activate the drive pretty quickly.

If you wait until you are almost empty you are wasting all those small bits of time as well as risking finding a gap in scoopable stars and having to retrace your steps.

Having just made the journey myself and finding the route planning a struggle when you get near the middle due to the number of stars I suggest going in high or low and coming into the core vertically, this way the nav map struggles to plan your routes less and you'll get further in before you have to plot jumps one or two at a time.

On my way in i just went straight and and at about 5000ly from the core the route planner started to fail, on my way out i went straight downwards and it was working much better even at 600ly from the core, less stars for it to sort though is my guess.

Good advise on the core nav - but I my limited experience tells me that the most likely damage will be from fuel scooping gone wrong, which is why I wanted to reduce the frequency.

I'm on a round about route back, doing more exploration than I did on the way in and I' at 98% hull, got thrusters at 94%. Had some lag loading in to a system once and the cat jumping onto my lap distracted me another time so i get your point.

This is cool. Some suggestions:
Drop the hull reinforcements and add shields instead. Should you be so unfortunate that you meet a psycopath or something else (insert insectoid race here), it is far better to have them scratch the shield rather than the hull. Besides, if your powerplant takes damage, you will never be able to repair it before you get back to a station. Also, shields are very nice to have when taking pictures in close proximity to each other.

Good luck :)

This is true. I would not however recommend turning off sensors. If you do, and you are unlucky enough to encounter a PvPer you'll have no opportunity to act until after they've interdicted you.

In a wing maybe just one person keeps them on? Unlikely to meet anyone anywhere else other than at the final destination though, when you get there you'll see just how many stars could be your penultimate jump point! :)

Plotting can get tricky in the core. Too many choices for the poor algorithm. Either manually plot, fly at a high or low plane, or plot in 200Ly jumps.

Did my Sag A Buckyball run yesterday. Ran into those plotting problems (it get's to 98% and then gets stuck) and, as has been posted elsewhere, there seems to be a "magic" number. For me in a 34.54ly jump range Asp this number was 990 (i.e. if I pick a star at any other distance such as 999 or 980 then the route plot get's stuck but if I can find a star at 990 it plots almost instantly). Weird but true.

If you're going to be taking a few selfie's on the trip then, as someone on a previous post advised, drop your landing gear to help give you greater control when maneouvering - it's really obvious when you read it though doesn't necessarily spring to mind when you're doing it and if you don't have shields accidental collisions can be troublesome.

Also don't bother waiting to find a neutron star to pose in front of, they're total rubbish for photos as they're tiny.

Best of luck!

Frosted windows look cool tho!

OK I have done some trial route plotting and it looks like each 1000LY will require about 40 jumps.

We will be leaving in about an hour (depending on a few things)
