Newcomer / Intro Joystick and keyboard config - migration

Hi,

This is half a question/ half a suggestion.
Unless I am missing something ( quite likely) it seems very complicated to migrate joystick/keyboard configs between machines and definitely not very intuitive. The naming seems to be made inordinately difficult as everything seems to change to config name 'Default' and then you have the option to go into the files and copy bind settings but keeping the same file format ...

Is there an easier way and if not Why? Many other games/software allows you to share configs between machines.
So please if there is no easy way, could you please add something into release 8 ?

Thank you, and all sensible suggestions much appreciated

IMO copying and pasting one file is as easy as it gets.
Sure, they could make it so that the bindings are "bound" to your account and automatically downloaded when you log in somewhere else, I guess. That's the only thing that would make it even easier ( i.e. not requiring any user action).
Then again, Elite tends to mess up the bindings from time to time - for example when you start the game and forget to plug in the controllers, so it's a good habit to have the .binds file backed up. And while it's backed up, it may as well reside on a flash drive that you can then use to quickly transfer the bindings onto a new computer.

As for the trouble that you may experience, they usually are caused by having multiple .binds files in the Bindings folder. So ideally you should keep only one. (Or two if you are playing both Horizons and Odyssey - the former's got the .binds file with 3.0 versioning and the latter has got the 4.0, unless you use a completely custom filename, for example one created by HCS voicepack)

No disrespect intended but i think you kinda proved my point... please make it easier!

You might like to make your suggestion in the Suggestions forum - this place is basically players helping other players, you are not talking to a Frontier employee.

That being said - you are quite correct, the way this game handles your controls settings is a complete disgrace. They can't even code a "Save As" button in the settings page(s) - so you might like to look at the very informative thread in the PC sub-forum to help you save and manage your settings:

Hi,

Thanks for the link. This was helpful. As you mention, this is far from optimal and a simple save would seem very simple and useful.

I was originally hoping for a link or help so this was a legitimate query. Instead it seemed I had my question reaffirmed rather than answered.

Although I realise I this is a player forum I was also hoping that the allseeing eye of FDev would notice.

I will make an entry into the suggestions section as you recommend.

If there are any other useful suggestions then I would still appreciate the help

Tx

Best suggestion I could give would be that if you need any help at all, just ask a straight question on this Newcomer's sub-forum, you will always receive good responses in here.
