Newcomer / Intro just bought a viper....... help

I have avoided combat like a [plague up to now. I just bought a viper to go try bounty hunting. not proficient in combat in aI don't expect to survive for a bit but would like to have a chance at lease ny way or form. I need help in how to outfit the fighter for best results etc. read something about bounty scanner... do I need one of those? if so, where do I get it? I don't see one in the 32 my outfitting hanger. I don't expect to survive much but would like to have a chance at least. Al;so where is good place to go for pirates? wo whatever I should be going after. sigh.

Well, you'll need to upgrade your powerplant, power distribution unit (very important) and probably your shields. After that, maybe two pulse lasers (to bring the shields down) and two multicannons (to damage the hulls).

You don't really need any new scanner (if you're short of cash). Just go to a Resource Extraction Site, and hang around for a while. Lots of Wanted craft will show up. Keep an eye on the Contacts screen, as soon as you see a new ship show up, select it then fly towards it, your basic scanner will tell you if it has a bounty or not. Avoid the bigger ships (Anacondas, Pythons, maybe Dropships and Clippers) until you upgrade your ship a bit more. Or you could just get in there fire a few sneaky shots and run away and still get the bounty for helping out, the Viper is the fastest ship in the game (I think).

... but get yourself a Kill Warrant Scanner. Takes 10 seconds but gives a return of ~30% additional bounties.

And probably buy gimballed weapons rather than fixed. Slightly weaker, but it doesn't matter how powerful they are if you aren't hitting anything. Once you get better at dogfighting, you can switch back to fixed.

Well you'll need to go to High tech system and/or an industial system to get the outfitting you'll want...
I'll recomment two gimballed burst lasers and two gimballed or turret multiguns to start with(later you can try other weapon and perhaps fixed weapont too) if you start BH at a local Navpoint you should have a fair chance of surviving once you tried that a couple of times try a RES too...
If you buy a KWS it can increase you BH income if you scan you Wanted target with that too due to your normal scanner only check the targets insystems Bounty price...where the KWS also check bounties from other systems...

Go to Nav Beacons first. There's a slightly slower rate of Wanted people arriving and there's also usually some backup.

Make sure you scan ships fully so it shows Wanted before you start shooting them. If you shoot before fully scanning the local security force will start attacking you.

Kill Warrant Scanner (KWS) is good, but first you should probably upgrade your Power Distribution, Shields, Power Plant and get Gimballed Weapons. After you've done that, if you have money left over, get a KWS.

Remember to use lateral and vertical thrusters to move around your target.

Once you start feeling more confident, or if pickings are small, head to an RES. These are usually found on the rings around planets, so look for a system with gas giants with rings.

And finally, remember, don't fly without insurance ;)

will look for one of those. however, I have pulse lasers on fire group 1 and multi cannons on fire group 2. what do I set the scanner to??

edit: and I am at high tech/refinery planet. 32 mu serpentis. no KWS that I can see nor gimbled weapons. sigh

For weapons I'd go for 2x class 1 gimballed pulse lasers and 2x class 2 gimballed multi-cannons.

Get the KWS - it can boost the amount of money from bounties a fair bit (if you are prepared to travel to collect them)

Get the best power distributor and shields you can afford. You will also need to upgrade the power plant at some point depending on how much juice your gear is drawing (the Viper can get very marginal on power depending on loadout).

Get better gear as you start earning from bounties.

Remember when getting upgrades that grade B equipment is heavily shielded but very bulky and grade D is light.

I tend to have
FG 1: Lasers on FB1, Scanner on FB2
FG 2: All Weapons on FB1, Scanner on FB2

people who like to micro manage will probably also have
FG 3 : Lasers on FB1, MC on FB2

My Fire group set-up for a Viper was -

FG1 - Lasers on trigger/FB1, Multi-cannons on FB2
FG2 - KWS on FB1/System Scanner on FB2

I can't seem to find KWS or gimbled weapons anywhere around Cuachini checked the high tech places that I know about, 32 mu serpentist and gibsons gateway but nothing. on that note I "think" I had a way to show t he high tech systems/worlds on the map but I can't seem to find out how again. help if you can.

I think I am confused on the fire groups. fb1 is my mouse left button and fire button 2 in mouse right button. are you saying I can put all weapons on button 1 and scanners on button 2?? seems t hat would fire everything at once which may be what you are saying but...

Yup. A fire group lets you decide "What happens when you press Fire button 1, and Fire button 2", and you can have multiple fire groups so that you can have different weapon / utility combinations.

Personally, on my Viper I had 3 fire groups:

For bringing shields down: Button 1: gimballed pulse lasers. Button2: chaff
Once shields are down: Button 1: gimballed lasers and multicannons Button2: chaff
Discovery: Button2: Discovery scanner

(On my Viper, I didn't bother with a KWS as it takes 10 seconds to scan, by which time you may be too late to get in the action. Plus you end up with bounties to collect in far off systems, you're probably better off just with local bounties instead of the round-time to collect KWS bounties).

I felt the same way Gyrehawk, but Wow, what a Rush Combat turned out to be, after many months trading. Have Fun Cmdr, that is your Mission, & remember, Always make sure you can afford the re-buy. Cmdr Badnews. out

sigh.. I guess I am dumber than I thought. if I have pulse lasers on firegroup 1 left mouse button and chaff on firegroup 1 mouse button 2 (this brings down shields)
then multicannon firegroup 2 left mousebutton and chaff firegroup2 right mousebutton how do I get a firegroup 3 to use the scanner? I only see 2 firegroups when I toggle through them. I am really confused.

second issue is where in $%^ can I find the gimbled weapons. lol sorry. frustrated a little. thanks for the help.

In the Fire Groups tab (in the right-hand-screen) you should see the KWS scanner listed, if you have one. If you click/select the 3rd column (i.e. fire group 3) to the right of the KWS, it'll create a 3rd firegroup with the KWS. Click once and it'll make the KWS fire on left mousebutton, click again to make it fire on right mousebutton, and again if you want to remove it entirely.

If you're talking about the "normal" scanner and not the KWS, you don't have to assign that to a fire group, just select a target, point your nose at them and it'll auto-scan.

(I don't use keyboard and mouse, so apologies if the above is isn't 100% accurate).

Shields, powerplant, thrusters and weapons should probably be your first upgrades. I spent just over 3mil outfitting mine to the specs I wanted. I upgraded piece by piece whenever I could afford to do so.

I really am stupid sometimes, er most of the time. found t he gimbled weapons. still not sure on firegroups though. see above if you can help

You can assign/map Chaff and Shield Cell Banks (SCBs) directly to a key. You don't have to put them into a fire group. For instance, you could put Chaff onto C with KB+M, or Y with Xbox controller.

Then your firegroup could look something like this:

FireGroup 1
Button 1/Left click: Pulse Lasers
Button 2/Right Click: Multicannons
C: Chaff

or

Right Trigger: Pulse Lasers
Left Triger: Multicannons
Y: Chaff

Fire Group 2
Left Click: KWS
Right Click: Empty
C: Chaff

etc.

No matter how many fire groups you have or what is assigned to both buttons, so long as the Chaff module is on, you just have to hit the Y button or C key to launch them. Obviously which keys or buttons you assign them to is personal preference.
