Newcomer / Intro just bought a viper....... help

When you scan then the bottom left hand panel that tells you the name, ship etc will also indicate they are wanted. I'm sure you would notice. They sometimes attack you if you scan them.

Look for signs of laser fire. There is usually a fight between the security ships and a wanted pirate. Just make sure you identify the pirate before you start shooting.

Oh,
Green = Friendlies. Don't shoot them.
Yellow = Random Whoevers. Don't shoot those either.
Red = is probably already shooting at you.

The scanner just shows the affiliation of other ships, it does not tell you their criminal record.
That's in the left display (and more detailed in the Contacts tab).

Oh, and this is important (I am still falling for it sometimes): even if someone is shooting at you,
you have to complete the scan. The Cops are all over a lone target and you only want to join them?
Don't ever fire on anything you have not confirmed as being "Wanted".

At a RES or Nav Beacon, if another ship scans you and says something over comms like "what are you carrying?" or "lets see what you have" - they will be a pirate. Highlight their name in your contacts list and pursue, remembering, of course, to let your scanner confirm they are Wanted before you start shooting.

NB if the comment is "you're clear, pilot" they're a bounty hunter.

Sometimes you have to wait a while. You can speed things up a bit though:

- Orange items on scanner are neutral, yellow are unresolved. So if you see any yellow triangles / squares on the edge of your scanner fly towards them until you're inside scanner range.
- Scan all craft, so their name changes in the Contacts list from "Sidewinder" to their name (so you can keep track of who you've scanned).
- Big haulers are rarely Wanted, Sidewinders/Adders/Cobras can be miners or Wanted. But I've never seen a Dropship or Clipper mine.. if you see one of those in your contact list, make a beeline towards it and scan it.
- If you're friendly with the security forces (as I am) then they show up green in the Contacts list, you can ignore those.
- Most craft you meet "up high" or "down low" aren't miners, since there are no rocks up there! Scan them.
- If you see a message in the Comms panel asking what you're carrying etc., that's inevitably from a pirate. As said above, you have to scan them before shooting though!!
- If you can see the name of a pilot in the Contacts list, but no bounty data (one way or another) that usually means you received a message like the above but missed it, so select that craft and scan them.
- And obviously, keep an eye out for weapons fire. Generally, if you see lots of lines-of-fire converging at one spot, that's there you'll find the Wanted guy.

Also add watch which faction you attack. Empire,Federation,Alliance. If you care about reputation with them.

thx again. will try again this morning
I am using the basic scanner. should I get the KWS instead? others have said no but...

That's up to you! :)

The advantages of a KWS:

- You can identify pilots who are Wanted in others sectors, but are "ok" in the current sector (basic scanner will miss these). So it's the only way of getting a bounty for destroying Wanted craft in an Anarchy system.
- You get larger bounties (I've heard), if so it's probably because of the above. You get extra money for the bounties in the other systems.

Disadvantages:

- You have to pay for it.
- It takes up a useful utility point.
- It uses a lot of power.
- It takes ~10 seconds to scan.
- You end up with bounties to collect in a lot of far-flung sectors; you'd make more staying in the RES and destroying more Wanted craft than flying around collecting them.

"For me", it's definitely not worth it early on, if you don't have much money or a great craft or lots of free utility points. But it's entirely about what matters to you.

KWS will get you additional bounties if the ship has been naughty in other systems too. It will sometimes also add bounties from local factions.

Bit surprised to hear you finding no wanteds at a RES though, they are usually crawling with them preying on the mining vessels.

It can be hit and miss. Sometimes you jump straight in and immediately are scanned by an Anaconda, at others I don't see anything for 2-3 minutes. If it's really quiet, it's usually worth having a look around to see any mining lasers in the distance and head towards them; there can often be activity well outside sensor range. Miners attract pirates. Or else exit the RES and jump back in, that often triggers a lot of activity.

well I am having different problem. I keep getting dropped out of sc and have to align with escape vector. I do that and it takes me out at very low speed. I jump again and it repeats all over. not sure what is going on. I am logging out and reclogging. hopefully it will fix itself. if not, then I am doing something very wrong.

Sounds like you are caught in a large bodies gravity well, you should be able to get free if you follow the escape vector for a while before changing coarse.

I had something similar happen to me a couple of days ago, it wasn't until I did a 180 and saw I was next to a planet that I realised what was going on.

Is this when you're just about to enter the RES? If so, you're either going too fast when entering, or you're not aligned correctly. You probably need to have the RES targeted when you're approaching it in order to get it right. When the RES is targeted, you'll see an Alignment, Distance and Speed indicators on the left-side screen on the dashboard in front of you. Get all 3 right, then you should see the "Safe to Disengate" (or something like that) text pop up, then turn off FSD.

The easiest way to do this entry/re-entry procedure is to set the throttle to the low/middle part of the blue band (to the right side of the main scanner) and this generally sets the speed right for approach, you just need to tweak your heading a bit to make sure you stay aligned.

If it's not a problem on entry.. sounds like a bug.

It sounds like you were too close to the ring of rocks around the planet (or the planet itself). You need to be further away and come in at more of an angle.

about the KWS

It depends where you are, I think. I live right on the border of Federation and Empire, my favourite RES is in Fed space,
my home base is next door in Independent with an Empire presence at the station where I dock for the night.
For every 100k bounty I get from the Feds, I can cash in an additional 25-30k from Empire. I think that's worth it.
And as my Viper is a no no-frills build, I don't have power issues.
