Just got my new Xbox One "ChatPad" for my Elite Controller!

I pre-ordered this thing back in July when it was first announced and promptly forgot all about it until it showed up on my doorstep tonight! lol!

Pleased to report that it fits perfectly onto my Elite Controller, and this thing is a wonderful and time saving addition for playing ED! Not only is the keyboard solid and full featured, it is also BACKLIT! One of the drawbacks to all the third party, cheapo ChatPads that are out there for the XB1.

Now when I need to punch in a new system destination, it takes me only a fraction of the time it took before using the controller and the clunky virtual keyboard! Since I play ED in the dark to enhance the immersion, having the backlit pad is awesome unlike those cheaper ChatPads that have been useless for me with ED in an unlit room at night.

Anyway.... Thought I would post this quickie product review. Far too many input features to get into here, but the keyboard on here does provide a bunch of one key short cut commands to various XB1 commands and commonly used navigational areas of the Dashboard.

VERY COOL in both function and FORM! It looks really slick attached to the already impressive Elite Controller body! In fact, with the ChatPad attached, the four under-paddles are less prone to being pushed by accident when you set the controller down on an uneven surface, such as the armrest of your gaming chair etc. It is also feather light, so it adds no perceptible additional weight to the controller.

Highly recommend! :D

I also picked one up the day after release, ordered it thru the ms store came the next day ups.

definitely worth it, my usb keyboard for some reason wont reach more than 6 feet wirelessly on the xbox, on pc it reaches all over the room. =/

I have always suspected that the device to console reception on the XB1 is below par compared to your typical wireless interface, and your experience with your USB keyboard via wireless tends to back up that assumption.

How long has this official pad been out now? I haven't been following it, and since I pre-ordered from Amazon I just assumed that it just dropped a few days ago. Sounds like you have had yours longer than that?

I agree that the wireless connections to the xbox are sub par, I continually lose connection to my controller. Very frustrating while trying to blow past the slot with a belly full of slaves.

Not to mention that now that FD has changed the way the game behaves with a controller disconnection, it becomes more than a minor pain, but now results in getting logged out of the game and back to the splash screen! Especially annoying if you had one of those very "Wordy" systems in your nav computer that you once again have to type out since as we all know, when you get logged out of the session, your nav computer course programming goes with it! :(

At least now that we have the ChatPad onboard, programming a jump isn't nearly as tedious as it was using the clunky onscreen keyboard and controller buttons! ;)

So I was thinking of getting one does the virtual keyboard still pop up with it? Because that's one of my biggest complaints I can't stand it takes up the whole screen

The virtual keyboard is still there. Basically the whole map interface appears unchanged by the addition of this ChatPad. One thing I can say though... Considering how much faster you will be able to punch in the name of the system you are heading to, you will be seeing A LOT LESS of the Galaxy Map than you are right now! ;)

I had a few concerns going in in terms of comfort and how that might change by adding this thing to the back of the controller body, but I am pleased to say that I hadn't needed to worry! I've been using the pad since the start of my evening ED session tonight just now into my third hour of play, and I really see nothing but upside by adding this to your controller! :D

I've jumped out and back to several systems around the latest combat CG using the Pad to type in the system name, and it is truly a JOY to program jumps now! Over the next few days I plan to explore what other aspects of the game's UI I may be able to access using the pad for making the input. Add this to the Elite Controller and you have yourself what I consider the best game controller ever made!

PERIOD! :D

I think it officially released on Nov 12. I ordered it direct from Xbox.com came the next day regular ups shipping. $34.99 The warehouse must be here in the Los Angeles area.

Helps for TESO and Neverwinter too

The other benefit is the keypad has a 3.5 headset jack in it unlike the OG controllers (I know the newer ones have this but if you bought an X1 back at release yours probably dont have them)

If you're playing ED, and you snap to the comms log, you should be able to start typing right then and there, with no virtual keyboard taking the whole screen up. Unfortunatly if you unsnap from the comms log, you'll lose all that you've typed

I too picked up the chatpad tonight at my local GS, it was such a pain to "type" using the onscreen keys but now its wonderful. Also picked up a Poseidon Z RGB mechanical keyboard, we bought the Blue variant, the one with the clicky keys, and oh man this keyboard it the bee's knees and I highly recommend it. Multicolored backlit display and more macros than you can shake a stick at. unfortunately the Elite XB1 controller is sold out everywhere but I have it on my wishlist as an immediate purchase when it becomes available again. I know I said I was turned off by it because you cant do macros on it, then I put my hands on one lol, thats all she wrote, man those thumbsticks just glide so effortlessly as compared to the regular one. The missus got a bigger monitor (32 inches) and new GFX card as well for her pc, all in all it was a great Monday :)

Does the chatpad have a audio output on it or not? Gotta ask. and if it does, Does it have chat volume control buttons on it or not?

It looks really neat for a click-in addition. Just throwing my experience here, I have a Rii Mini (i8 2015 I think) for my HTPC (Intel NUC running OpenELEC) which works seamlessly with the Xbox One as well. The NUC sits above my Xbox, so I just dongle swap when I need it. It's backlit too, and it's great for controlling the home screen and some of the video apps. I haven't used it very much since the New Xbox Experience to be honest, but the range is impressive. If I'm at my dining table about 18 feet away it works without a hitch, and I only paid £15 including postage from Amazon. Obviously it doesn't click into the controller, but it's perhaps a little more versatile?

So yes, it has volume controls on the pad, and also has a 3.5mm headset jack (headset included too).

I'm thinking of getting this set.
Does the headset have volume controll in the cable too like the 360 headset, or do you have to have your chatpad attached to be able to adjust the volume?

Cheers

Thanks for including the photo! I totally forgot to mention that it came with a new headset! This is because the ChatPad uses the standard jack instead of that specialized type that comes with the the standard controller and XB1 console.

Only issue I have found so far is that I can't seem to find a way to assign the X1 and X2 buttons on each side of the space bar to favorite games. When I go to the settings section on the console as directed in the instruction booklet, I see no options for assigning the X1 and X2. ???

Anyone with the Elite Controller figured that out?

Thanks for the info on the headset, I'll definitely get one now!!
The X1 is for instantaneous making a screenshot, X2 for recording the last 30 seconds of gameplay.
At least that's what it says in the comments of the youtube clip you shared.

Cheers
