Just got my rift tonight...

Thank you for posting your experience using the rift, CMDR Telnets.
I have been reading reviews and watching videos on the Rift DK2, so I'm able to reach that informed decision about getting myself this technology without the risk of any recommendations. It's always down to the individual consumer.

Your experience however, has me more exited than ever. Especially as delivery was swift. There are several threads I will refresh myself with here on the forums before mine arrives and as I am in UK, I expect a possible two week wait, perhaps longer.

Good luck using yours and I certainly hope you maximize it's usage... lucky. ;)

I'm glad my review has been a help to some of you thinking about taking the plunge now, or holding off until the CV1 version! Look forward to hearing what you think of it if you do decide to grab one now!

To be honest I just ordered it today after you posted this. Not sure if my pc is up to the task, but if it's not I will have a new project underway, haha. Thanks! =D

Same here, ordered mine just now :)

Someone mentioned something where you can watch films in space or something?

Anyone know what that one is called?

I can't wait to give it a whirl in ED

It was me :) http://www.mind-probe.com/vrcinema/ The standard Cinema is pretty mind blowing, so is the one out in the Ocean. You can change seats in the Cinema, and use a webcam to display the outside world on a tiny monitor by your seat.

I've said it before, get a BKgamer dude - it transforms the game and watching movies - http://www.buttkickergear.com/ButtKicker_Gamer2_p/bk-gr.htm

Ah thanks Driver, will definitely pick that one up cheers!

Any other recommendations for a new Rift user? :)

I'll look into the Buttkicker cheers, looks interesting. I bet this is popular with the lady gamers... o_O

I bought a rift to to try out with flight sims, heard about elite dangerous looking good on the rift so bought a copy to try it out along with other rift demos, i have since been hooked on elite and cant get off the bloody game.. i have had tripple monitors then 3 projectors onto curved screen trying to get great immersion, none of my previous efforts even come close to how the rift and ED feels, the eagle cockpit feels amazing, and your first expierince in a type6 when you can look down and see your landing pad.. I could not play ED without it..

Couple of my friends came over yesterday and played Dreadhalls on the DK2

I got 12:32 seconds before i had to stop..
my friend Dave for 8:10
my friend Sylvain got 20:05

:)

I am determined to get through a level!

Mine came in today, I mostly echo the OPs first post with the experience.

I find the screen is very hard to read with any hud colour changes, but I am familiar enough with the game that it is nearly a non issue. I am surprised my computer even plays it with my old GTX 560ti, but it seems to be having no trouble.
After familiarizing myself with it I took a Cobra into a High Intensity Conflict Zone, and the sheer size of everything was staggering. I didn't expect the smaller cockpit of the Cobra to be more impressive than flying the Clipper... =P

The trouble I have with the rift is that I find it incredibly uncomfortable, can't wear it for much more than 30 minutes without needing a long break. I am playing around with the straps each time to find a better fit but the bottom half of the headset presses into my cheeks really hard.

try adjusting the top strap more, it should more or less hold the weight of the unit on your head, and don't tighten the back one too much.. the unit wont go flying off your head or anything.. Shouldn't even need to tighten it as much as you would a pair of ski goggles..

The one thing i did notice while playing, and this only happens in ED.. is the screen will flicker for a 1/2 a second in what looks like black & White every minute or so.... i dont know if this is some sort of effect in the game or something, but i dont notice it in any other game, nor if i play on my monitor.. and its not the seat clipping infront of my "face" or anything.. because ill just be sitting looking at a menu, and it will just go B&W for a split second then back to normal..

dont know if anyone else gets this or not.. thought it was kind of weird, but then went into other games to ensure it wasnt just my unit being weird or faulty, and sure enough its fine in the hours i spent in other games.

I notice the flickering colour sometimes, it usually happens if i lean forward or stand up and bang my characters head into the cockpit cieling.

Definitely trying to have the top strap hold it up, I think my head is just too fat or something lol. I have the side straps fully loosened and experimenting with the top one. I just need to use it more I think, wear it in and get used to it. The glasses don't help... =P

I don't have a rift (YET) but that sounds like a loose cable connection maybe? I used to get similar things with my projector. Sometimes over time the cables would get a little loose, and I'd loose red in the image or get black & white.
Perhaps as you move around the connection sometimes disconnects a tiny amount?

Yeah thats what I thought at first, but checked the cables and they are good.. and with it happening while im just in a menu, as well as it not happening at any other time (Ill watch 2 movies back to back in the VR Theater - so roughly 4 hours use).. it seems to JUST be in ED...

Oh well, Its not a big deal, its so quick that i barely notice the effect, but was just wondering if any other rift user has seen the same in theirs or not..

Its your tracking. When you are "out of range" it will change the color, I guess as a way to tell you the tracking is off. In my case I have a very large monitor close to me its on so I angled it down and that flicker went away.

Yeah true, it's the camera losing focus, nowhere near as bad as TrackIR. OP needs to ensure the camera is in a good position, mine sits on top of a 42" TV so has to be angled downwards.

I will be getting a retail rift when they release.

Seems like a waste of a cash for sub-par visual experience.

Even the CEO's of rift have gone on record and a said if your looking for quality then your not going to get it with the DK2, and you should hold out for the retail model.

Glad you enjoy it though.

I bought the DK2 a few months ago, definitely no regrets, and will buy the consumer when it comes.

I'd rather play ED with the DK2 than on a 4K monitor, and they are about the same price. Always good to have a backup, stuff breaks. I'd be so sad to play this game on a lowly monitor, and the DK2 basically is the price of a basic monitor.

My only complaint is they don't sell lens replacements, and they get scratched easily. I'll be very angry if the consumer model doesn't have replacements for sale.

Feel free to try downsampling. I have a GTX 980, and I tried all kinds of downsampling, it looks identical to me. Someone even showed a screenshot of non-DSR and DSR Elite Dangerous. I couldn't even tell the difference in their picture.

AHHH.. maybe thats it, Ill give it a go.. My camera sits ontop a 32" monitor, but its more inline with the headset, not pointing down a little at it.. so ill just raise it up and see if that helps.. Ill report back on Monday when I get the chance to fiddle around again with it.

Thanks Phier and Driver

Sentdex - I have tried supersampling as well.. and while i wont claim there is no difference, I certainly cant see it either.. text looks the same to me.. Changing the HUD color did make things a lot better, but i cant stand the fact it changes the radar so im back to orange for now until they seperate radar colors from HUD.. i know enough where things are, and text is still 95% readable i would say.. only a few times ill have an issue, if its a system that has an IL in the name, or a 8 instead of a 0..

Still, not a single regret! :)

Enjoy. You won't be able to read red text on the services/bulletin board but those are always "nos" anyways.
