Newcomer / Intro     just happened?!?!? Did I just lose over 25 million CR worth of a ship???

The first time I even encountered this problem was when flying my 50M Clipper. Until then it was never a problem, so how should I have learned this? Not from manuals because this stuff is not in the manual and certainly not from FD, because they could not care less apparently

What do you mean by "couldn't care less"? Insurance costs after losing a ship is a feature, not an unwanted side-effect.

And you're trying to tell me that you never ever lost a ship before being able to buy a 50m Clipper, yet still consider yourself a "mediocre or bad player"? [weird]

I got my first Anaconda and have not been destroyed yet. I'm very, very careful. Since I'm not much into combat, the Anaconda is just the ideal trading ship for me: 400T of cargo, huge shields and armed to the teeth. I've been interdicted by Federal Assault Ships and I was able to destroy them before my shields even went down. I'm sure I would not last against human players but for solo play the Anaconda is the perfect ship to fly around safely in Solo Play.

While the insurance mechanics seem to make sense, it does discourage me from experimenting with expensive ships. But I'm not complaining really. I'm coming slowly to terms with ED difficult gameplay.

I was killed hundreds of times, but apparently always had the money for insurance or I could loan up to 200.000 ... So never learned that lession until your out of the loanshark range and then the costs are tremendous.

And I do not try to be mean to FD by stating "they could not care less", just saying that the insurance option is not right: You pay insurance so you can get your ship back when something unfortunate happens; the way it is now in the game, does not provide that option; it is a weird concept and FD is deliberately not doing anything about it; there were thread about that

Strictly speaking at the moment in the game we are not paying for the insurance. The pilots federation, that we are all part of and who gives us our ranks, actually pays all the insurance premiums, including recovery of our escape pods, we pay a 5% excess charge. That is why we don't pay anything towards the insurance before we have an accident.

It is a bit like some of the schemes some car makers tried a few years ago to try and capture some of the new driver market, the first X years insurance was included in the price of the car, but the usual extra bits and pieces that UK car insurers use to try and avoid dealing with minor scratches were the drivers to pay for if they made a claim.
