Just heard of another CMDR dying in real life - time for the Tionosla ship graveyard?

Good idea, but it would have to be in neutral space; because having some of the glorious Empire baskers, being laid to rest, next to those Fed vagabonds would be bad enough. But pilots would be spinning in the dust; if they know they were being laid to rest in, another factions space.

Just saying.

As I suggested, it would be nice to have it on a planet near the Heart and Soul Nebulae

The Tionisla Graveyard would, shockingly, be in Tionisla, which is Alliance Territory.

Actually I can understand why it might be difficult to implent such idea into the game and I wouldn't count on that too much.

First of all some people prefer to leave serious matters outside of entertainment. Putting names of famous persons in-game, like Carrie Fisher f.ex, is one thing - making a graveyard of people like us, our friends, acquaintances - it's something else. Not everyone likes to be reminded of their mortality while playing games. Devs might not want to mix such heavy topics into something that supposed to be relaxing, lightweight entertainment.
I would probably get seriously depressed while visiting such place. "Those people played Elite and died". Even thinking about it makes me want to quit and go for a walk with my wife. It might be good thing, actually, but not a reaction that developers of commercial product would aim for, you know.

There's also another thing > who's going to choose those to be commemorated? If I die today, tomorrow nobody in game will even notice, and even if someone will, he might think I just stopped playing Elite - My wife would not think to log here to tell you guys I just kicked the bucket, as she doesn't know or care about these forums. So, probably only people who are active on social media will get the chance. That sounds rather unfair, so it should be open for everybody to add their candidate. I might want to commemorate my father, mother or brother. Or... well... someone's cat. The list, when opened, will get long, absurd and probably (let's be serious - certainly) trolled. Will you need to provide death certificate,or will I be able to add ants from my recently deceased Ant Colony?
Therefore I understand why FDev simply cut this idea short (naming stations after cats) and we probably will not see anything like this graveyard in game. Much less headache for them.
Maybe it will be possible with the ability to create your own stations...

But,
why don't someone make something like this here, on the forums, instead? It should be heavily moderated, to allow only meaningfull entries (250 pages of "that's sad" and "my heart is broken" could be a nightmare to navigate), but people could share stories of other players who are no longer with us. Pictures, movies, anecdotes. Maybe this could work.

It would have to rely on people reporting deaths and a certain level of trust on the part of FD. However, i think we can mainly hope that people generally won't take the mickey and not troll FD with fake reports over such a sad subject.

I agree, naming after pets was a step too far, but naming after people who enjoyed the game right up to the end, i think its a great thing.

That why I pointed on the Other idea about the thread about the youtube video and the Cat that pass away. But if we link it to an Email/game I don't think this basic idea is a bad one. Add the last ship they had and paint job to a location. Family could also supply a picture of a death certificate.

Absoloutely, and by having the graveyard have the last ship they flew in game, it would ensure its linked to a CMDR, not a cat.

In-game memorials would just become the next hot place to "protest" some daft thing, and frankly, if it was a station or planet in a system, I don't want to have to bother even think about the drama-llama that usually follows if my or another player group conquered, attacked or otherwise acted with hostility towards it...

I personally don't think it's reasonable (or appropriate) to expect FD to do anything every time a player dies. If players want to do something, whether that's out of game or using game mechanics, then of course they can, but nothing should be expected from FD.

(EDIT: Just to be clear; if FD wanted to do something, that's their call, I just play their game. I just don't believe there's any reasonable expectation for them to)

Its not expected. Its just nice.

For some reason it took them years to figure out they'd walked right into the middle of minefield, but once they did they found their way out using the lack of resources method.

I know people have wanted this for a long time, but just as a general location.

Perhaps FD could put it in, and when a player is confirmed dead in real life, the last ship they were flying could be added to the graveyard along with a their name somehow attached to the ship.

I know FD do beacons and other stuff already, but i think a ship graveyard would be a nice way to add these memorials and would put them all in a single location.

I am just wondering how this would work in practice.
Would FDev need an official statement from relatives, or can anyone be pronounced dead by anyone?
Would the account have to be inactive for a certain period?

What if the person was religious and the family insisted on his/her/it's plaque being in acordance with their beliefs, how would one go about commemorating them without offending other religions, the deists, and atheists ?.

Lots of glass half empty replies (fair points all) making me think a better thing to ask for would be a way to add a persistent POI like a tourist beacon, created by the players themselves. That would cover this & any number of other things, they could be visible only to the player that created them or flagged for approval to be visible to all players.

Wow wow wow.

Now I am a LEP owner and because I have spent a fortune on this game. I am entitled to have my place in doggy heaven, maked by F.D. for the rest of time. In fact, I want to be able, to go and visit my own personal memorial; by the end of play today. As someone who has PAID for this game, this is my right and anyone who states or believes differently; should be banished to the Outer Rim and ignored for eternity. I also demand, (again because it is my right as a minor investor) that every player that comes within 1,000Lys of my 'marker'. Must stop what they are doing and be forced to visit and pay homage to my existence.

I think it is a neat idea.. may be difficult to implement and may also end up with a full time position having to be created since a lot of people do pass away unfortunately.. all will be missed of course.. but it may be easier to have maybe an annual event or something created by players themselves who wish to 'go somewhere' together... I was for it 100% at first but the logistics or programming involved etc and all that may make it difficult. I respectable idea however as I too have been moved by the loss of players and the wonderful community outpouring of empathy and sadness which has followed each one. Thanks for loving your fellow human beings Original Poster (OP)
