Just ordered a Vive...

In light of the political situation right now, I've decided to reject reality until it is over. That and if the pound tanks any more, all tech is going to get a lot more expensive to buy in the near future.

Anyway, I went with the Vive for the long term view over the Rift. From reading around it seems the Rift is the one to have for ED and it does look like there are some problems with the Vive...

Delivery isn't due until Monday so I have some time to clear up my house so I can actually use it. On that note, I have a question that is ED related. Do the sensor beacon things have to be anywhere in particular? I think I'd need them in different positions depending on if I'm using it for ED at my computer desk, as opposed to elsewhere for bigger room usage.

For the Vive base station positions, read the enclosed docs.

I have mine on opposing walls almost 8' up with a 30 degree down-angle. That covers my living room and gives me a 12' x 12' play area roughly. My computer desk is under one and to the right and I have no issues.

I did have to move a framed glass faced picture from the side wall as the IR was being reflected off of it causing my Vive to pull down for a second suddenly. Oh and if any of your remote controls for TV, DVD player, etc have issues, unplug the base stations when not using them. They interfere.

I've been using my Vive for ED for some time now. System map and galaxy map is horrible and it's hard to read stuff but I tell you, a Sidewinder has never felt as big as when you're out in the SRV and look at it.
Also supposedly small mirrors no longer affect tracking, but I have 2 huge mirrors in my room and they mess with it big time so prepare to cover that up.

When it comes to setting it up, just put them in each corner of a room at a distance of roughly 5 meters or less apart and have them look towards the floor in the middle of the room and it should be good.

I'm sure it'll be awesome congratulations!

I went the other way and ordered a rift. I have zero space for room scale so its not an option and the apparent better performance in ED makes the rift more sense for me. You'll have yours wwwaaaayyyyyy before me though, so enjoy :D

Might not take very long, just ordered my rift monday and got the shipping soon email last night. So excited!

I was happily surprised to see the Vive available from stock at several UK suppliers. Could even pay extra to get it tomorrow, but there's no point as it will take at least the weekend to clear some space...

That the advantage of VALVe partnering with HTC. HTC have massive electronics production facilities globally and can hammer out large qualities.

As others have said, the vive documentation does a good job of spelling out the details. I will say though, cause this wasn't clear to me, but the Vive is technically capable of tracking with a single station, just in a more limited area. So as long as one of the stations has a decent angle on you when you're at your desk, that's all you need for solid tracking.

I started thinking about a VR headset as I've spent more time mining recently and pan around a lot more, but then my girlfriend just started complaining about ED last night and with cats also causing trouble regularly it probably wouldn't work out for me. :/

Installing now. I need a bigger house. Going to go for a temporary setup for the sit down mode and try it before I even think about room scale... and how many sockets do I need?...

Wow... I have no regrets but now I do want 2nd gen to come out ASAP. Desperately needs more resolution (4k upwards might suffice) and improved optics. FoV wasn't as bad as I feared but could use a bit more. Are the optical artefacts off centre supposed to be that strong? Maybe I just need to play more with the headset configuration as I've not done much yet in the rush to get going at all. SDE is minor. Minor issue so far is although I set my facing direction in setup it decided to choose 90 degrees from that through the tutorial. I'll obviously need to fix that before I try ED.

I just got my Vive last thursday, And I find it being completely worth it, even in ED with it's issues.
I also find that getting into the VR takes a little extra effort, and when you are in, you are IN.
This makes the time in the game that much more focused since there is no youtube, netflix or other second screen distractions I can't even drink or eat while wearing one so having a Vive is cutting way down on my late night drinking ( I used to have a beer or two while playing in the evening) it's physically impossible to drink with the vive on, unless you use a straw.
Even when I'm out of VR that focus somehow comes with, when I'm out, I'm out and less distracted, I'm sure that doesn't sound too awful for the SO.
As for cats, well their cats it's not really an issue with mine.
And with the vive at least you can turn on the "tron" camera and actually see them without taking the HMD off.

No need to re-orient.
The Facing direction at least for room play setup is facing the way it does in the effort to give you the most "flailing room" and other things like cable comfort.
(They assume your pc is next to your monitor, and having cables trailing behind is better than going in front of your feet)

With ED this isn't needed at all, in fact my border lines are behind me in my seated position for ED, only thing I need to do is hit the reset position button in ED, default is f12, I bound it to my throttle directly, this is handy since for some reason hitting apply in options will reset the position, and while using an HMD, looking at the apply button means looking 40 degrees left...

Typing isn't really an issue, not much more than when I played on the HOTAS on my screen (keyboard isn't entirely within reach then) and I have been touch typing since I was pretty much twelve years old, and the buttons don't move just cause I can't see them :p'

Now the map itself is my biggest problem, I honestly hope they work something out with that BEFORE fixing the aliasing\readability issues.

And yes, of course more FOV and resolution is desperately wanted, this is so far WORTH IT.

Btw I heartily recommend vanishing realms (if you got the space) fighting giant skeletons with sword & shield is just g awesome.
Second game for the Vive I recommend is Hotdogs, Horseshoes & handgrenades, but I guess I'm also a bit of a closeted gun nut :D

Just tried ED... I don't feel well now! Once I found and mapped the reset view it was easy enough. Started the flight navigation training mission to get a feel, and spent a while looking around the ship. Now I understand the issues reported... it's like it needs a ton of AA applied as details were shimmering everywhere. I felt like I could reach out and touch things around me, although reality said no as I hit something hard next to me. Tried quickly messing around with display settings which made zero difference. Never mind, went into external cam mode. Looks good... but immediate motion sickness brewed when I moved the point of view around. I don't get this on a monitor, but I sure did here. I wont be doing that then.

Up into station, again the graphical glitches were obvious and it seemed tilting my head up to look around put me inside the seat back. Exiting through the slot really bought home the size. You just don't get that feel on a monitor. There was a planet outside and again, that looked great, but I felt a little motion sickness come on again as I swing the ship around. It seemed worse when turning faster. Turning back to look at the station... this was less impressive than I thought it would be. The detail just isn't there. I had more of a wow experience the first time I put that on a 4k TV. Also had a little difficulty docking as it wasn't obvious where the direction of travel was and I kept drifting up or down a bit of where I wanted to be.

The FoV I felt also needed to be bigger. I'm used to having more info visible without having to turn to look at it. The side panels in particular were really over to the side.

So... I don't think I'll be playing ED on the Vive in its current state. Letting myself re-sync with reality before I try the free games I got with it, as well as other free ones from Steam.

The best way to use the galaxy map when you are in VR is to aeh .. map the galaxymap to a gamepad (awkward sentence.. I'll cop out by saying that english is not my native language:p.
As for the motion sickness you experienced : you will eventually get "vr-legs", but your rig might not be able to keep up the framerate in Elite. A low framerate, or even worse a varying one, is *deadly* for your overall well being. try reducing the details (shadows, depth of field, and occlusion are the main troublemakers when it comes to framerates).

A steady and good framerate in VR is definitely worth the lack of graphical details ... *especially* in Elite!

oh .. and Welcome to VR btw :)

I was wondering (worrying) about that. I ordered my Rift but it's not going to come until August. Will I have paid in pre-vote Pounds, or will I be paying with the worthless sheets of toilet paper we have now?

They won't charge you until it ships, so the toilet paper it is.

Looks ok to me. I'm currently running a 980Ti and 6700k, if that isn't enough for VR high defaults in the graphics settings, what chance does anyone have?

What currency did they charge you in? If they specified GBP, it will still be that GBP (check the small print for any clauses about changing price). If it was USD or something else... it will be whatever exchange rate when they take the money. Worst case might be they charge you in a different currency but only show the GBP equivalent while ordering... again, check the small print.
