Newcomer / Intro Just purchased my first new ship - The Hauler

Hi People,

Just after a bit of helpful advice. I've just purchased the Hauler and was wondering if anyone could help me out with what sort of loadout to use in it.

I know it will sound stupid but I'm still not sure what sort of route to take with it? What would people recommend? I tried a bit of mining in my sidewinder and quite enjoyed it and I'm still not too familiar with the trading side of things. I have yet to try the exploration side.

So what do people think is my best route to take and with what equipment??

All help will be really appreciated.

I expect a ship called a hauler is good for about one thing : trading.

There's another thread in this part of the forum about trading rares, that's where I'd look.

That's why I put it would sound stupid, but what I meant was, could I get the best of both worlds by exploring at the same time, or maybe mine and explore? +Rep ;)

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask ;).

I too bought a Hauler as my first upgrade ship. It's lack of firepower (after doing one trading run) made me nervous so i anted up the extra 30k for an Adder. 3 hardpoints plays one, and one of them is a Class 2 so you can stick a class 2 mining laser on there if you fancy it, and it also has the ability to carry more cargo.

My only question is whether I can get away with getting a Class 2 Shield Generator rather than the Class 3, as the Class 3 seems to big for the hull weight. From what I understand there is not performance benefit of a class 3 over a class 2 as long as you are under the max weight of a class 2 Shield. I'm sure that someone can confirm or deny whether my assumption is correct.

You can explore with any ship, so long as it has at least the basic discovery scanner in it. You get better returns for exploration if you have the advanced surface scanner as well, but it's a 250k investment and uses another slot.

On my hauler i did this:

Sell weapon
get the best FDS
get up to 22 cargo space (no shield and no discovery)

And trade like crazy.

at 400k cr, i did buy a viper and modules for bounty hunting.

I might get a bigger transporter when enough money. (1.5-2M cr i think)

For my Adder (transporter at the moment) I have

2x burst laser
1x Multicannon
Cargo scanner
Heat Sink
18x cargo
class 3 shield

Thinking of ditching shield to class 2 for an additional 4 cargo capacity. When I get enough for a bigger trader this will be come my explorer ship i think, as it has decent jump range.

Had a Hauler once, sold it because my other ships are taking over its duties.

Hauler can do everything other than combat. Give it a mining laser and a refinery, it becomes a miner ship. Remove the refinery and slap on another cargo hold, it does basic trading pretty well. And if you have another two million creds to spare, remove all cargo packs and stuff in an ADS, a DSS and a fuel scoop, and you got yourself the cheapest dedicated explorer vessel.

Loved the Hauler when I had it, but my advice to you is grab a bunch of trade missions, get some more cash built up, and get the Adder. It's a luxury Hauler, and has a lot more to offer. And it's not that much more.

May i congratulate you on an excellent purchase decision.

The hauler is a cheap yet cheerful craft which, if you care for it, will give you lots of love in return. Its most decidedly not a combat vessel, but for its size is a good trading ship and strangely enough, one of the best exploration ships in game. It has enough slots to handle all your exploration needs without sacrificing anything, and its jump range is one of the best.

Good luck commander!

I second the advice about the Adder. You can get 20 cargo WITH shields, and it also has decent maneuverability and more guns than the Hauler. For about the same price.

my hauler setup

I kept the shields... tramping about deep space with no shields is lunacy.. even against NCP's in solo mode

(special thanks to the guys who helped me with the screenshot taking)

The Hauler is missing the range required to be a good Explorer. Think of it as a Ford Delivery Van... its not a MAC Truck for you to be a trader, but someday you will save up enough for the TRUCK aka Lakon Type 6.

Hauler's possible Role =
1) No weapons, No shields, All slots to Cargo bay, Good Rank C or A FSD and haul away.
2) Mining Laser, No Shields, Refinery w/ 3 Bins, Rest to Cargo Bay and mine away.

So pick your poison... Milk delivery boy or Oppressed under paid Miner.. :D hahaha.. Either way you are Shark Bait!

Everybody, Shark bait ooh ahah!

Oh man, sold! I'm totally going for an Adder next!

Hauler is great for short safe trade routes .... I got adventurous and started filling it with gold and going it a bit further... Not a good idea ..as I found out to my cost...

I bought a Hauler initially as i wanted more cargo space than the Sidey, (which i did a single run loaded to the gills with 10 Palladium and sweated all the way as i was shiledless and only had 2 pulse lasers!), but I needed something multi purpose that i could give somebody a slap with if required. The Adder fitted the bill more for me, but the Hauler has is place.
