Just reinstalled OS on a new drive - will i need to reinstall ED?

I have ED saved on an external drive. I just reinstalled my OS on an SSD but ED wont run (says missing file of some kind). I guess I need to reinstall the game?

Any ideas?

no mate just copy the game over or hit the launcher from your external drive, it should put whats needed back on your ssd. well it did for me last week anyhow.

That's a bit surprising - but then again we don't know which OS either of you are talking about.

On Windoze that would indeed be a rare occurrence as most programs install critical registry entries that are required to run properly. There are exceptions, but they are rare.

In addition, I think Elite requires some C runtime files that might need to be installed on a new OS refresh. that's probably what the OP doesn't have on the new OS install. There might also be some DX9 files needed. I didn't pay close attention as my installs went very smoothly, but I do recall seeing some older runtime components being installed that are needed for Elite to run properly.

Might even be some older Asp.net version re-install that doesn't get automatically get installed on new OS versions. 3.5 I think.

Mac systems may not have the same issues.

Just get an error about MSCVP110.dll missing and that's as far as I get. I'm downloadin 190+ windows updates now which I forgot to do - will see where we are after this

In fact, I'd run it anyway, as I don't think Windows updates will include it. I might be wrong, of course!

I have seen that - pretty sure there's a google fix.

https://www.google.com/#q=Elite+Dangerous+MSCVP110.dll+missing

Yeah - related to the C++ executables.

"That DLL is part of Visual Studio 2012 (11.0). Download the x86 ... find that missing file from google because i got the same error and i fixed it ..."

You might also run into an Xinput1_3.dll error as well

that too can easily be found on google and fixed.

Just tried running Valley - got same error by MSCVP100.dll this time. I've already downloaded the visual basic runtimes but this has no effect on any apps so far - they still wont run.

Depending on the size of your original boot drive, it's usually easier just to Clone it to the new one rather than reinstall the OS. It's a bit late now as you've reinstalled the game, but the path I'd go on a clean install is all your drivers first (Motherboard, graphics card, audio etc) then full Windows Updates, then any individual files games are still asking for... the location of them isn't important, indeed I am still running programs from an E:\ drive with a WindowsXP install on it in Win7 without moving most of them (I left it there as a back up boot drive, and never got around to removing it)... the issue is only if they call old Windows features or DirectX versions. If you have the Steam version of E : D you can just reinstall Steam somewhere, then copy across the SteamApps folder to keep all your games without reinstalling the lot.

ok I'm in - needed to reinstall the launcher and run a direct x update :)

oh yeah, game reinstall didn't work - oh and my orca now sounds freaking awesome...

Just replaced my ssd and chose Samsung drive to replace as it comes with some neat cloning software. Drop the drive on a usb port, clone the drive and then drop the disk in. Took about 30 minutes from start to finish. No issues or problems. Might be worth considering next time.
