Just what DOES a system honk get you these days??

I've been in the Black for almost two years now... Just finished an an extended break (family and work stuff) and I've come back to a FSS system that confuses me. I've worked out how to use it but it's as clunky as hell and really seems to have taken away the fun of discovering new systems.

So what DOES a system honk find you these day? It used to show toy the planets in the system and then you could decide whether to go and investigate further. Now it seems to tell you there's stuff out there but not show it to you... Does it still 'find it' for your explorer paycheck and status even though you can't 'see it'? Sometimes it will show me a couple of planets (usually close in HMC bodies) but mostly it just shows the star...

Considering I've got 280+ jumps left before I complete the Sol-Colonia-Sag A- Sol triangle, I'm wondering if it's worth it and whether my mapping from the first leg of the trip will have changed from what I 'found'?

The red shows the cost associated to each body type for a honk, yellow is FSS scan and green is FSS plus detailed surface scan (mapping the planet)

This chart is outdated. The FSS scan gives you as much as the green (the old ADS+DSS), the DSS scan gives you roughly 6-10 times as much, for an undiscovered body. For example, mapping an undiscovered ELW/WWTC will give you roughly 3,250,000 Cr now. You can see the exact formulae and values here.

Dr. Nagi's answer is correct. Technically, one thing is missing: the honk gives you the ability to use the FSS as well, since it's locked behind it.

Yeah, you can open it, but you can't use it without honking in there.
This is probably just so that there's no way to use it without the star auto-scan triggering.

This was what I used on the way out but it's outdated apparently...

So, Honking the system gives you the discoveries (approximately the same as it used to) but won't show you the bodies unless you enter FSS? Is the a quick way of recognising the ELW/WW so you can decide if it's worth spending the extra time in system?

There is: you have to enter the FSS to see a barcode there. Each body type has their own (rather narrow) range on that, and if there's a squiggly line in the position, there are unscanned bodies of that type in the system. There's an in-game tutorial for the FSS, it should come up the first time you call it up.

What has changed is that the honk no longer reveals the system map, and you have to scan everything if you want to see the complete map.

No - honking does not give you discoveries apart from stellar bodies and any planet / moon within the passive detection range (30Ls). To "discover" bodies you have to either FSS-zoom-in on them or fly within the passive detection range.

Yes you can easily see on the frequency scale at the bottom of the FSS if there are signals in the correct place for EL, WW and AW. You soon get the hang of where these signals appear on the scale.
