Community Event / Creation Kate Russell i am disappointed!

hi Kate, i was expecting a shameless plug of your book Mostly Harmless. On BBC Click today but to no avail. Or was you told by the producer you cant?:S

it's a shame, but they give you a clue in her bio:

Most people would like Kate's job on Click which involves surfing the web and trying out all the latest apps on her impressive collection of smartphones. She has been a technology reporter since the mid-90s and started tinkering with computers aged 11, when she got addicted to her first game, Elite.
In her spare time Kate enjoys kick-boxing, creative writing and annoying her Twitter followers. She believes she has recently devised the perfect scientific formula for café latte.

Yes, Kate has previously said that it would likely be the end of her Click job if she tried to slip a plug in.

Of course if Click were to do a feature on crowd funding (perhaps they have? I don't get to watch it very often) then there might be scope for using Elite as an example. Especially due to authors running their own crowd funding so they can make pledges on another project! However, the BBC would probably be too worried about being accused of unfair bias due to a presenter's close association :(

Kate has stated (in a reply to me) on KS that she cannot be seen to promote a specific product (despite her recommending apps and sites). The programme "Click" can also not be seen to be promoting a product.

If you want proof of how touchy a subject this is, Radio 4 recently featured David Bowie's new album & single, which he released on his 66th birthday. This was then mentioned on the news programmes, and the BBC received a flood of complaints for promoting David Bowie's new album.

The BBC have to be so careful what they let be broadcast, as has been mentioned, it would cost Kate her job (even if she is freelance) and her reputation if she was seen to promote ED via the BBC, and I think none of us would want that.

just cause Kate is prevented from plugging it doesn't preclude the rest of us from doing so, well away from the BBC to avoid any problems for her but I'm sure a few posts on facebook or Google + wouldn't go amiss

Just goes to show how some people have no lives. Spending all their time complaining over an album or something. If they didn't report it these people would complain that the BBC didn't cover news.

But as a government-funded body it is vitally important for the BBC to be impartial. And it has a huge amount of respect because of that too. I don't rely on any other news source than the BBC (okay, maybe Twitter too!) because of its reputation.

Actually, you'd be advised to always check multiple news sources to find the "true" story (or as true as it can be). I prefer BBC, but I also check out other international news 'zines if the topic is of more than passing interest to me.

If only that were true. When was the last time you saw an impartial broadcast about the royals?

I don't read the stories about the royals ;) Overall they're not perfect, but they're a far better single-source than anywhere else.

I wonder if Kate will have a reference to the Beeb in her book...?

"She believes she has recently devised the perfect scientific formula for café latte."

Interesting. I have a few ideas about that myself.
