I figured I should chime in, seeing how my avatar is Chewie haha.
As much as I am for the science of it all, I fear my response is one of from the heart. Just emotion. The Falcon had two seats, side by side; and in the films, this is where we see much of the story of Star Wars develop. Thus when I think of the Falcon, imagery of these scenes play in my head, along side the scenes of the flying space shots. Thus, elite dangerous ships that also feature side by side seating elicit a more 'falconey' feel to it.
Second, when I am in the elite dangerous hanger, and I switch to view the ship from outside, and at head height, I feel like the Python is the ship that 'feels' right. I don't know why, just is. I think the scene in A New Hope when the crew is trying to escape the Death Star with Leia, the Python kinda fits that look/feels.
Third, I feel like the Falcon could handle itself in a fight, and does the Python too. I know it's not a true haulage ship, but with guns and cargo space, and some speed, I feel it's the right mix of flavors.
Lastly, the scale. I know people will say the Python is too big. But let's be honest, in the world of elite, we also have much, much larger ships that are run by the federal and imperial navies; the python could theoritaclly land in one, just as if it were a Star Destroyer.
So there is my non-science answer, based solely on the feely-feels, and emotions
