Keelback versus Asp Scout for mining?

With an A-rated distro (no engineering), it can run two small mining lasers for about 2 minutes. Not sure if heat would be a problem towards the end or not, though.

Two small mining lasers is 3 MW of drain. 3A PD has 2.8 MW of WEP recharge at 4 pips. The total drain is thus .2 MW. 3A PD has 24 MJ of storage. MW = MJ/s, so it would take 120 seconds to drain 24 MJ at a total drain of .2 MW.

I don't recall having any heat issues when I used it and I did a lot of mining in it. It made a decent little miner.

The only issue I had was staying awake. Two small mining lasers is just soooo slow and 500t is just sooo much for an engineer.

Not to mention all the work it took afterwards to clean her up so that she would be respectable enough to carry luxury passengers again..

Yeah, two small mining lasers is like mining power 1.8. A single medium is about 3.4

The Keelback is horrible.

My wife looked over it while I sat wringing my hands, trying to get it geared for its intended purpose of mining, and she said "What is that ship even good for?"

I sold it.

On the basis that it's my "Millennium Falcon", I set mine up to be a smuggling ship.
It runs really cold and it can silent-run for ages.

Not sure if there's anything about the Keelback that makes it especially good for this but it can certainly be made into a good ship for this.

Aww. The Keelback is not horrible.

I love mine it is a great little ship that carries all the toys for a fun trip.
It has a great view for scouting planets and when a suitable spot found is found you simply deploy whichever you wish, SLF for some risk free, high speed canyon running or SRV for surface acrobatics/stunts.
And it still has room in the hold for beer and Latvian Brandy.

What's not to love about this ship.
It's simply wasted potential to use it for mining.

I went from a type 6 to a type 7 to a type 9 for mining. The type 6 was a great little miner but I'm spoiled now in my type 9. 10 collectors at once lol. I don't own a keelback so I'd recommend a type 6 or the aspx.

I’ve had a lot of fun studying ~10 million cr mining ships builds. Power distributors, limpet controllers, refineries, number/size of slots, hardpoint sizes, and cargo capacity and how that all has to be traded off to work together for a useful build for each particular hull type. Seriously considered the AspS and Keelback to the point of buying ship paints in the store, but not the ships themselves.

Decided in the end to bend a bit on my desire to not buy duplicate ships of same type and went with a 20 million cr AspX build as my dedicated mining vessel. It really is the game’s least expensive, no compromise miner. I did buy the AspX ship-kit however, so I can make it look different than my exploration AspX and pretend they’re not really the same type vessels after all. ;)

you can take an SLF and npc pilot along with you with a keelback.
some additional protection for while you are out mining.

PS. I wish there was a good use for the scout. its a nimble little ship. but it doesn't have a standout purpose.

This is the exact role I use my Keelback for. Objectively, it's a terrible miner if you want to make a profit quickly, but it's good for the occasional entertaining moment catching pirates offguard.

You should, at the very least, swap the collector and refinery so you have a 3A collector and a 2A refinery.

No way. I've been using this build for awhile and know what works for it. The 3A Refinery already has enough trouble keeping up as it is.

Do you use the contacts ignore feature that was added in 3.0 to stop your limpets from picking up stuff you don't want?

AspX or Dropship for mining. Anything less is near useless. The Cobra IV comes close, but I can never stand to fly that ship for long. It's so gimped it's pathetic.

I've used the Dropship for a lot of things and really is a nice once you learn to fly it properly. Does a credible job mining until you can afford a Python.
