Community Event / Creation Kerrash Landing- Donations?

I need advice from you all, should I put up a section for optional donations on the stream?

I have been put off this idea in the past because I hate asking for things, but it has been suggested that I should do it.

The main reason was so I could afford to pay the monthly subscription to remove adverts; which I can't afford myself.

Do you think I should put it on the stream? What would you like to see in return other than no adverts?

Thanks

If requests for donations are discrete I don't have an issue with them. We all know (well most of us know [well some of us know]) that bandwidth costs someone, somewhere. So if you state what kind of donation you expect and what the benefits it will be I say do it.

P.S. If we're both near a bar at LaveCon I'm definitely buying you a drink. The videos from you, Scott Manley and brumster100 convinced me that it was worth joining P-Beta. And I'm loving it.

That wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
Donations are voluntary after all, so you're not asking for anything.
If people want to support your stream, let them.

I've seen streamers with subscriptions, donation links and advertising (referral links). As it's all optional I don't see a problem with any of it.

I have seen streams where people have those donation drop things where people donate and something happens (they get some kind of shout out or a message from them pops up). This seems to work very well with some kind of event.

I'd much rather see a donate button than an ad. Go for it. I would have liked to share captures myself but my upstream bandwidth is preventing me from doing so at the moment. That and the fact that I actually have very little time to play at the moment. So I like catching up on your streams when I have a moment. It allows me to see some of the in game stuff without actually spinning up the PC and launching ED.

In return it might be nice to do specific segments on things your audience is curious about. Last week somebody asked me what it was like to fly into a ring around a planet. So I showed them. That was fun. I would have liked to share it but like I said, not enough upstream bandwidth to make that realistic.

Keep up the good work! I really enjoy the stream and would donate if you gave me the opportunity.

it works out to be about £5.50 a month to have adverts removed from your twitch account.

I know, I am just not financially in a good place to do it right now :(
There are other things I would like to do too beside removing ads, that's why I wanted people to suggest things they would like to see.

If people use Adblock Plus they won't get adverts. I know because I use it and I don't get adverts. No need to ask for donations, no need to pay a monthly subscription.

Adblock Plus and the like prevent YouTubers, streamers, etc, from generating revenue.
That wasn't the question.

So if the ability to remove adverts already exists ...

EDIT: I want to clarify, I have no opinion on this at all. I am just saying people could use adblock plus.

know what you mean buddy, I've recently been made redundant, and the missus is saying that If im going to be creating images for people 2 or 3 hours every evening then I should start charging for my work or at least get others to pay the monthly subscription for photoshop and image hosting. I couldn't do that personally as its something that I want to do for the community and as such I wouldn't ask for a donation.

you could create revenue by having people who donate being invited to be guest speakers on your twitch stream, or you could do your own adverts for other people like " Kerrash Landing brought to you by McDiabetes"just an idea.

Personally I see no problem with asking for donations.

I like your broadcasts, they have certainly given me some entertainment over the last few months before I could get my hands on ED.

I will be completely up front and honest though, equally I dont find the adverts annoying either and truth is, call me tight but, I personally probably would not donate (sorry bud) though I would happily buy you a beer if ever our paths crossed.

I am not sure if you can do an add banner thing which you can get money from??? but if you could do that however, I would be more than happy to click an add banner each time I watched.

As for an Ad blocker suggestion.... That is a morality call for each individual to make, and hell, I am not judging there are plenty of things I do which are less than 100% honest when it comes to digital streams on the internet,

BUT I think people who do use add blockers need to just keep in mind that, adds are there for a reason, and, by letting the adds run they are supporting the ability to keep many streams free.

If everyone used an add blocker I suspect some services would cease to exist. (Like I said I am not judging).

PS I am quite likely to be in the redundant club soon too as well, on the plus side, it gives me chance to get through my steam catalogue. Thankfully my rift and X55 is already paid for so I dont have to worry there :D

I'd go for that....!

Not so sure about going for McDiabetes though... Keep that one back please ;)

I genuinely LOL'd at that :D

But yes, I see your points. Trust me I really don't want to go scrounging, it's not in my nature, I just trying to think of ways to do more.

I don't see it as scrounging.... you've both done a lot of work free of charge for the community (Artwork and streams)....

You could always argue that hobbies cost money and that a monthly budget should be set. :) If we didn't have hobbies, then there would be a lot more unhappy people out there...!

Kerrash, I think a Donation button would be great. Let it be voluntary. I ran a Neverwinter Nights persistent world for >3 years and when it came time to upgrade the server, I let my playerbase know what I was planning on building and how much it would cost (which was only US$600). Told them if they wanted to donate, I'd appreciate it. I collected $600 before the end of the 2nd week.
PS- I really hated asking too. I kept talking about it with my DMs for months beforehand, telling them I couldn't afford the $600, but...blah, blah, blah. In the end, I was glad I did it.
