Newcomer / Intro Key binding help needed

I've spent the past few hours trying to bind keys and am in a right mess. Can't see out of cockpit as I'm stuck looking at the left-hand panel. Took an hour to lift off. Gave up trying to shoot down that one (easy) ship in training mode after half an hour - only hit it twice and that's with training assist on..

It's all very well having flight and navigation videos online but without some help with key bindings first of all they are useless.

Also I have a Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas which I calibrated in Windows but it's not coming up as a selection option in the game controls menu - I've seen guys on Twitch have different controller options in the menu. Some help with that would be useful.

Very steep learning curve getting this set up - controls menu is really difficult to understand and not at all intuitive. I fear many people will not be happy with this.

The default bindings are 'just' sufficient, more tweaking is certainly far better. Not all bindings need to be set in the game. Most you probably won't use, or at least I don't. It is very customizable.. and with so many options, can be overwhelming. It was for me too at first.

For my Saitek X55 HOTAS, it took multiple hours over multiple days to set, play, and fine tune the controls to the point where it worked well for my play style. Yes, I know that doesn't sound encouraging, but take heart that I am crazy finicky about my controls haha. The hardest part I found was building up the muscle memory for a new HOTAS configuration. The first few flights out it felt clumsy and confusing. Once I had the controls well in hand, the game started played very smoothly. Now I can't imagine playing without a stick and throttle.

Unsure about the T-flight hotas config. I'm sure there are others with that stick on here that may have suggestions.

If you want to get a good idea of some stick configurations, check out the X55 HOTAS discussion thread (If I can manage to find the link to it I'll add it to this thread). It has some good layouts which I'm sure could be adapted to other HOTAS setups. Which reminds me... I should post my keybindings up this evening when I get back home. After many days I settled on an arrangement that seems to work well (for me).

If you're stuck on the left panel, press whatever key you have bound to that panel again (see Mode Switches, Target Panel in the control setup) and it should revert back to the normal view.
