Key Bindings could really use a search feature

The key binding screen is the stuff of nightmares....it's horrible.

We've all been through it but seriously whoever thought of that layout and the minimal descriptions of functions or the logic of which menu certain functions sit within.

It took me ages to find the option for switching between cockpit modes & the night vision mode.

If I were a new/casual player trying to set up the game for the first time I'd run...run and never look back.

we need to be able to save them to an external file to. sick of mine getting wiped after updates.

C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings
Copy 'Custom.3.0.binds' and paste it somewhere safe. Backup! (or am I missing something obvious?)

to be fair there's no easy way to lay out that many options and for such a variety of controllers, a search function would help but not really solve the issue which is the proliferation of modes and special cases. the game does a good job supporting a very wide spectrum of control options but could benefit a lot from those categories undergoing a few cycles of streamlining and unification. the additions of q4 were just senselessly thrown on top and even leave the game ui in incosistent and flimsy state with the new mode, which ... why should it even be necessary? the whole control scheme, and specially the q4 stuff, would need a good hard look from the usability perspective.

I would like in Elite Dangerous (and some other games I could mention) the same thing Star Citizen uses ... you can mock and sneer at that game and it's devs all you want, but they do some things right.

Being able to see what each key is bound to is very helpful

The SC layout is nice. Quite easy to navigate.
I'm half-tempted to write a stand-alone alone app with that kind of layout so Cmdr's can set up their bindings easily and then save them/backup/restore/share them etc.

While the Elite Dangerous keybind options are great, and certainly the most complex I've seen, it is very much a case of "it can only be found by those who know where it is" (yes, the first Pirates of the Caribbean film).
A search option would be a good idea. Type in a search box and it live updates the options expanding the collapsed options and highlighting the word ... but you'd have to have it only do that after, say, 3 characters, otherwise one letter could highlight half the options.
