Keyboard Keys / Commands that Work on PS4

Inspired by another thread, I started to do some experimenting. Come to find out, the keyboard CAN be used to interact and even control some parts of the game! Here's what I've discovered thus far (some of these were found by other players):

* Arrow keys work to navigate the main and Option menu
* ESC key works like the Option button on DS4 (brings up menu)
* CTRL-F brings up FPS meter in main menu only (but this may be a bug)
* CTRL-B brings up bandwidth meter, same rules as FPS
* CTRL-L creates a "network bookmark" (no clue what that is)

What this tells me is that ED is polling the keyboard, even when not in a text box! The ESC key in particular is interesting, because this works inside the game itself.

I haven't tried all possible combinations yet, but if nothing else, it begs the question - is there any good reason why Frontier can't add keyboard shortcuts to things like silent running, cargo hatch, and the like?

Absolutely none in my opinion.

Edit: Have you actually tried to bind anything to the keyboard in the settings Old Duck? I know I never have..... I am guessing its not going to work but, yesterday I didn't know about CTRL-F on PS4. Hmmm

Stormy - nope ... I can use keyboard to open Controls menu, I can navighate in menu, can open Cooling (just example), but can't assign any key ...
.. but then I can close menu by pressing ESC and quit menu at all ... it means keyboard recognized, it works but we are not allowed to assign key ...
stupid ...

I'll give it a go and see what happens. There are some keys that the PS4 itself seems to map. For example, Print Screen takes a screenshot (PS4) and Pause/Break key takes me to the PS4 Dashboard. I don't know if ESC and arrow keys fit into this category or not...

Just checked. No joy on control assignment. However, WSAD keys work like arrow keys in ED menu, which makes me think this is ED's programming instead of a PS4 OS thing...

Consoles still say no to keyboard controls.

Gotta' keep that player parity, yo!

USB keyboard is cheaper than a HOTAS ;) #Parity

Console HOTAS is about as versatile as a regular gamepad.

As an owner of a Saitek X52 for 2.5 years, let me assure you that the T.flight is just a fancy PS4 controller.

It pales in comparison to my X52.

Yeah parity has nothing to do with it. One thing is prevent people from playing K&M on an FPS. Another is to allow people to deploy a landing gear by hitting a key rather than by pressing a button. There is no increase in "performance" whatsoever.

You know someone will yell unfair if I can deploy the landing gear with a device that isn't a standard gamepad.

I've actually once been reported after I escaped a player on Xbox, because I use a HOTAS. (Obviously nothing came of it)

FDev could follow a different path, "Voice Commands"

FD has zero experience with voice commands.

Let's make that an additional path rather than a different path. As cool as voice commands would be, my wife will start beating me with pillows if she has to hear me say, "open cargo bay doors" and "close cargo bay doors" one hundred times an hour as I gather manufactured materials at the RES.

Thats true :)

That actually makes zero sense, because with a DS4 or Xbox pad or even HOTAS, it might actually be less intuitive to use a keyboard at the same time as a HOTAS or Gamepad. Gamepads and the HOTAS are designed for two hands on the controller(s), I still want to try it!

Project Cars 2 for example uses full keyboard binds on PS4, so theres no reason why they couldn't put key binds for us to use on a KB.

So does Fortnight, KB and Mouse, I think by now we have established that its probably not Sony that's blocking keyboard use, its FDev. Which actually is very, very odd.

Totally agree. The T.Flight 4 is garbage compared to the X52. My X52 is hiding in a cupboard hoping one day that it can be used on the PS4.

You can bet your bippy that the "David" plays on a pc.

I think you assign too much credit / blame to "the David". He's probably partially retired from the day-to-day decisions. I believe it's "the Sandro" (or that sock puppet controlling his mind) that makes all these decisions, LOL.

ps - we're probably both wrong :p
