Kickstarter and Elite 4

Do you think this might be a good option for David to use to gain support for development of the game?

I'm sure he is worried about funding, the scope and obviously how well it would sell. I'm sure the community would come together to help pay for development of a new title.

What do you guys think?

I'm sure they've already covered many similar schemes, as well as working out what they've got to work with out of their other commercial projects.

While the fanbase are beginning to get impatient for another "Elite" or "Frontier" (we're past the 25 year mark now), time will tell if they actually get around to releasing one or not.

Till then, the "Elite"/"Frontier" fanbase will remain hopeful that something may, one day, be released to match their expectations.

I came here to post the same thing about Kickstarter, and found this thread, Wasteland 2 has gotten a lot of money so far and I loved fallout 1 and 2. Kickstarter looks very good for devs who have released something previously. The funny thing is , if they do release elite 4, -bags will say its a ripoff of notch's 0x10c haha, not realizing elite came out in the 80s. who knows though, 0x10c might stir up the market for space games like elite again. The only thing that sucks, is my ultimate dream game I've had for a while was a lot like elite with some major addons and differences, but 0x10c seems to have a couple that i thought of. I've been learning programming recently and my goal is to make my dream game eventually.

I have trouble believing that the passion for the game actually exists at Frontier any more. If there was really a desire for this to happen then it would have a long time ago. I just don't think that the "technology is ever going to be up to the vision" and I'm afraid that if The Outsider is anything to go by I would not be putting my faith in the game being finished anyway and certainly not my money.

Hi Steve mate. Long time no hear!

Sadly I think you may be right. It's been a long time since anything has been mentioned about e4 apart from the standard reply from DB when questioned.

I've pretty much given up hope of it ever being released. And I never thought Id say that :(

When the outsider was cancelled I think that was the final nail in the coffin for e4.

Now if frontier wants to prove me wrong I'd be delighted.

If you guys don't believe any more then things must be really bad. As i've mentioned elsewhere, it's the lack of any news at all that annoys the hell out of me. Tell us one way or the other, we're all adults now, least the ones that played it from the start, so just let us know, Yay or Nay. Frontier would gain more respect from me at least if they just told us what is going on.

'Sup TJ, yeah, been sitting back quietly watching and waiting. We're victims of our own enthusiasm and Frontier has used much of their past fame from efforts long gone to fuel it along. I won't contribute any further to the exercise because clearly David and Frontier stopped long ago. It is frustrating because it seems, out of all of their potential projects, that Elite is by far and away the one with the greatest potential and the greatest passion from fans. If Frontier had a demonstratable commitment to producing this game, actually put what they had on the table and said - "guys, it's early days yet but we're committed to getting this done to the best of our abilities" I'd back it with a presale and much like everyone else that used to frequent here, I'd contribute as much as I was allowed.

The kickstart idea is a good one but it requires the momentum to be started from the devs and producers not from the fans getting out of the bus and pushing... IMO of course...

I think that this was a wonderful opportunity to build a fun and interesting theme based community and it was for the most part ignored... but hey, I got a T-Shirt out of it :D

Helloo, I personally think Kickstarter is a great idea, the reason being that the Outsider was delayed due to funding problems, being as stated that it was going to be the forefront technology for Elite 4 tells you that problems exist in that area. Why would there be an outflux of commercial stuff such as Kinectimals if the company had the spare cash to cough up the rest of this project as well as Elite 4. If we want it to happen David needs to know for sure that there will be financial security in the project, and kickstarter is the 'voting' place to show that, even if the full amount is not needed, at least then interest is fully voted for, the reason I say this is because the guy has already expressed how perfect he wants it to turn out, therefore he needs to know that the public is behind him. I think it's a confidence thing, that's why he's hanging back.
Maybe that is the cause of vapour-ware (perfectionism), and advancing projects based on and competing with what he wishes to do himself are causing question into how much he should invest, he is constantly under threat from people trying to recreate his own masterpiece.
I think he is hanging back, when what really made Elite a masterpiece was down to the dark lonely atmosphere, space was very big, and the sense of humour of the bizarre descriptions (random generation) and the feel of the whole thing.
I played Atari ST Elite, but it wasn't the same, it was too bright, it didn't have the dark lostness of the original, but that is just down to how I felt about the game.
David isn't Elite, he's a fellah who produced an amazing atmospheric who isn't sure how to follow it up.
Kickstarter, buy him time and confidence. More confidence, more decisive decisions.
Maybe I'm being daft, but that's how I see it.

I think doing a Kickstarter project for Elite 4 is a brilliant idea but it would require an enormous amount of cash. But even if it get the project off the ground it would be worth it. Now we have a new remake of XCOM around the corner surely the next game to be developed has got to be Elite: The Next Frontier!

Perhaps once Star Citizen comes out David Braben will pull the prize plum out of his rear - assuming he's not sat on it so long it's become coal...

Oh how predictive this thread proved out to be, chuckle chuckle.

I preferred my name of Elite: The Next Frontier though.

Mmmm, that's what I'm a bit concerned about. We could all (collectively) put £100's into this project - yet it still might not happen.

Could be (another) false dawn. ;)

The fans are with Frontier and David ALL the way. I'd rather something take more time to get it right.

I can't wait !!!

Kickstarter is this.
Bypass the publishers to see upfront if there is market for your game in early stage.
Wich means if you get the mark and bit more your won't have risk but more security of having a market with hard prove.
But it also can show that the hard proof is there s little market for it.
That the good thing about kickstarter. You get a hard oroof before you commit large funding. So keep losses relative low.

Publisher like this to. You get hard proof so they are more willing to fund large amount so you can do even more with your game.
A 2 mil game could become a 7 mil game.
